Chapter

The date for the next battle had long been announced and the day had finally come. Yunho prepared for the battle in silence. The room that used to be full of life had become empty. The vampire couldn’t speak of his thoughts, worries or plans aloud. He couldn’t even voice out his disappointment in his failure. It felt as if he was a child again, alone, struggling against a world that didn’t understand him, without even a friend, let alone a best friend. A bitter smile stretched across Yunho’s face. The only two people he had come to truly cherish other than his family had gotten together a while back and he was out of the picture. It did not help that the person he fell in love with was the prince of a Kingdom that happened to be in a war with his own Kingdom.

Jaejoong.

He had thrown his card out when he was with the prince alone in the woods. The plan he had long schemed finally saw the light when he defeated the prince of the Kingdom of Ice in a battle he had waited for his entire life. Jaejoong was under his mercy and he had taken advantage of the other’s weakness to complete his plan. He had talked to him, forced reason into his head about the ridiculousness of the war that had killed countless vampires who were supposed to be immortals. With words, and even pleas, Yunho had kneeled and asked for the prince’s help because only kings and princes could stop a nine hundred years old war.

A truce, that’s what he asked Jaejoong for. The only solution that neither of the two kingdoms had ever approached, the only solution that could work.

Jaejoong had agreed, but Yunho’s plan had taken a sharp twist when he offered the Prince his own blood to heal the other’s wounds. The feeding had driven them both to an unplanned situation, with their lips attached to each other, fangs sucking each other’s blood. There and then, Yunho realized that he was truly and helplessly in love with the prince.

The red-eyed vampire thought that after his encounter with Jaejoong, the war would halt, take a turn before stopping. Apparently, he was wrong and another battle was just hours away.

A knock on his door pulled him from his thoughts, and Yunho smiled before the door was opened, because he could never forget or ignore the scent that belonged to the human who had shared his room for two years.

“Yoochun, come in.”

“Hi,” Yoochun closed the door behind him and smiled. “How are you?”

Yunho’s smile stretched wider, because his room felt suddenly complete once again. “I’m fine.”

“You’re worried.” Yoochun stated, walking towards Yunho and kneeling in front of him. He put his hands on the vampire’s knees and tilted his head, worry evident in his face. “You did what you could. All you can do now is to just wait.”

Yunho’s eyes stared at Yoochun’s hands on his knees and he sighed. It felt like nothing had changed. Like Yoochun had never left this room. He was as observant as ever, and the other could still read his mind like a book that it didn’t surprise Yunho anymore.

“I don’t want anyone else to die. Changmin…” The vampire paused before licking his lips. “He almost died in the last battle too.”

The hands on his knees tightened. “Changmin has promised me that he would never die,” Yoochun talked, voice wavering.

“Do you honestly believe in those promises?”

The human lowered his head. “I believed yours when you made them,” He fixed his eyes upon Yunho’s. “Now I believe him when he says them.”

The vampire smiled, leaning down spontaneously to press a kiss on top of Yoochun’s head. “I will make sure he stays alive. So don’t worry.”

Nodding, Yoochun attempted to swallow his nervousness but it wasn’t passed unnoticed by the vampire.

“What is it that you need from me?”

“Heh?”

Yunho chuckled. “I know you as much as you know me. Come on, what is it?”

“I…” Yoochun began. “I’ve been thinking of something, but I’m actually scared to even think- of it” He took a deep breath.

Yunho nodded and listened as Yoochun talked.

Disappointment vanished in the air and was replaced with sighs of relief when the battle was canceled due to a special request from the Kingdom of Ice.

“Yunho!” Changmin ran towards his friend. “Yunho, you did it. They’re backing out.”

The said person responded with a hug that would probably kill Changmin if he wasn’t a vampire. “I’m so happy. Changmin, oh god Changmin. It’s happening.”

“We’re getting there,” Changmin hugged him back. “We’re getting there.”

That day, each vampire went back to his or her home, healthy and alive. Yunho and Changmin walked beside each other to their building and it wasn’t a surprise for them to find Yoochun waiting for them by the door.

“You’re back. Thank god.” Instantly, the human threw himself in his lover’s arms, hugging him tightly.

Pinching the bridge of Yoochun’s nose before planting a kiss on his lips, Changmin answered in amusement, “I told you I’ll be back.”

Yoochun turned to look at Yunho. “It seems your plan worked.”

“So it seems.” Yunho replied, successfully hiding the envy he had for his two friends. He watched with a smile and a heart full of longing for the vampire he wanted to be with, as Changmin and Yoochun returned to their room.

The next battle’s date was announced yet again. The frustration Yunho felt was less than the one he had felt during the preparation for the previous battle. Before his mind could dwell on the possibilities of his failure, Yunho decided that he should talk this out with Yoochun and Changmin. In the end, they were the only people who understood him. He walked out of his room and towards his friends’ but the conversation that reached his ears stopped his hand from meeting the door in a knock.

“You were the one who suggested it first remember? So why are you backing down now?” Came Yoochun’s heated voice.

“I wasn’t fully aware of its danger on you. If anything goes wrong, you will be dead.” Changmin replied, his voice sounding more serious than angry.

“But I want it. Don’t you want to be with me forever?” The human’s voice went an octave lower.

“Forever is a very long time.”

“I know, and I want forever with you. Unless… unless you have changed your mind”

“No!” Changmin exclaimed. “It’s everything I want. Everything I’ve dreamed of. But to watch you go through so much pain is just-“

“Shhh,” Yoochun whispered. “I’ll be alright, okay? Don’t think of the process, but think about us. Just us.”

“I love you so much.”

“I know. I love you too, and that’s why I want it. Please.”

Yunho took a step back, cursing himself for nearly accidentally intruding on such a moment. A hand found its way to his beating heart and he clinched his chest hard.

He would have to talk to them later when the time is right.

The battle was called off again by a messenger from the Kingdom of Ice. Roars of happiness echoed around the Kingdom as soldiers once again ran back to their homes unharmed.

“Hyung!”

“It’s been a long time since you last called me that.”

Changmin chuckled at his friend’s joke. He rested his hand on the other’s arms and squeezed, his expression softening and his eyes turning from delight to anxiety. “I need your help.”

Frowning, Yunho flung an arm around Changmin’s shoulder and brought him closer. Words weren’t needed because the older vampire knew what exactly the other wanted. So he tightened his hold on the other’s shoulder as they walked towards their home where the source of Changmin’s uneasiness lied.

Yoochun was waiting again. He was resting against the wall beside the building’s entrance, legs curled up and chin plopped on top of them.

The older vampire could feel Changmin tensing, but the latter’s eyes showed nothing except for longing and love. “Don’t worry. Everything will be okay. You should be stronger if you want this to work.” Yunho said reassuringly.

“How did you know?” Changmin asked, eyes never leaving his lover’s figure.

“Yoochun talked to me about it. I assured him just like how I’m assuring you now.” His arms slipped from Changmin’s shoulder just so he could meet him face to face. “You’re already an adult. You love him, he loves you. He wants it, you want it too. It’s gonna be okay.”

“Will you be there?” Changmin asked, lips twitching. “Will you stay with me?”

“I will if you want me to.”

“Please!” Closing his eyes, the taller vampire tried to compress his anxiety. “I need to do this right.”

The older vampire smiled. “Look right there! Do you see them?” He pointed at a couple smiling in front of a building close to theirs.

Changmin chuckled. “Yeah! I talked to Siwon about it. Seems like Heechul has become stronger than him.”

Yunho laughed, eyes glowing in delight. “That is true.” He nudged his friend’s side. “Nothing to worry about!”

“CHANGMIN! YUNHO!”

Both vampires turned their heads, only to find Yoochun running towards them without a care of the heat the land reflected on him from just a mere few seconds. Changmin had an armful of Yoochun and Yunho got a hit on the chest from the same human who was sweating like he never did before.

“Don’t ever do this again.” Changmin whispered in Yoochun’s ear, hot breath hitting the other’s neck.

“It won’t affect me after this!” Yoochun answered calmly, arms tightening around Changmin’s middle.

“There is no turning back after this.” The vampire warned.

“Forever!” The human whispered, planting a soft kiss on the vampire’s cheek. “Forever with you is what I want.”

Taking a deep breath, Changmin pulled himself up just to kiss Yoochun’s lips softly. “I love you,” He whispered, confessing his love to the human lying underneath him.

Yoochun relaxed, brown eyes meeting his lover’s red ones. His hand caressed the other’s neck. “I love you too.”

Watching the exchange from the door was Yunho and he relaxed his back against the hard surface, folding his arms in front of his chest. He watched as Changmin kissed Yoochun once again before trailing his lips over his skin, his tongue darting out to lick the expense of Yoochun’s neck, the sound of the latter’s heartbeats being so loud that Yunho could hear from a distance. The vampire pressed his lips against the human’s skin, fangs extending and scribing flesh.

It took less than a second for Changmin’s fangs to sink in Yoochun’s neck, the sound of him sucking the blood out of his lover eagerly and at the same time worriedly loud for Yunho to witness. The scent of Yoochun’s blood filled the air and the sound of his moans echoed with every passing second.

Changmin drank and drank and drank. He drank even after Yoochun’s cries of pleasure had died down, even after Yoochun’s hold on his arms had loosened, even after the pale of his skin had gotten paler. Resting his hand on the pulsing vein on his lover’s neck as he sucked, Changmin measured the human’s heartbeats and the amount of blood he had taken. After what felt like ages, the vampire finally pulled back, staring as Yoochun’s eyes lost their glint. He then brought his own wrist to his mouth, bit it to draw blood and held it in his mouth. Bending down, he angled Yoochun’s head before pressing his lips against his. Droplets of blood dribbled down the human’s chin as Changmin pushed his own blood into his mouth. Yoochun’s lips moved slowly and sensually against Changmin’s, his throat swallowing the blood he was offered without any protest.

Meanwhile, Yunho was sitting on the nearest chair, watching as Yoochun’s eyes completely closed once Changmin’s lips left his. The younger vampire licked Yoochun’s lips, cleaning them from the traces of his own blood, wiping them with the hem of his shirtsleeves after. His arms went around his lover’s limp body, holding him close, tightening his hold with every shudder the human produced as he started changing. Both watched closely as life was further drained from the human’s body, his pale skin turning impossibly pale, almost blue.

Hours had passed, and Yunho had felt every second of the passing time. Changmin was still holding onto his lover, whispering sweet nothings and promises into his ear, even when he was completely out of life.

“Changmin, take a break, please.” Yunho pleaded.

“He hasn’t waken up yet.” Was Changmin’s answer.

Another hour had passed before Yunho noticed the color of Yoochun’s skin returning. “Changmin! Yoochun.” He pointed out, hopping on his feet and coming closer, resting a reassuring hand over his friend’s shoulder.

Changmin didn’t reply. He sat next to Yoochun, hand holding the other’s slowly warming up hand. The vampire’s lips quivered, lifting up to show the ghost of a forming smile.

Yoochun’s skin slowly came back to life, the coloring gradually increasing until his normal skin color had returned. The redness of his plump lips recovered. The life was returning back at a pace as slow as the one it went out with.

“Yoochun? Baby?” Changmin called, hand caressing the soft warmth of his cheek. “Wake up, baby. Please wake up.”

The flatter of Yoochun’s long eyelashes was the first movement and that was followed by his lids opening slowly. The brown of his eyes was gone, replaced by a new glowing red color. His eyes roamed briefly as they took in the various colours and shapes in the room before finally focusing and landing on the figure before him. At the same time, the newly turned vampire was moving his hands, one of them squeezing Changmin’s hand back. His mouth then twitched-

He smiled.

“I’m back.” Yoochun whispered.

Changmin mirrored Yoochun’s smile.

“Welcome back.”

A couple of months had passed before the Kingdom of Ice’s Prince, Kim Jaejoong, had officially offered a truce to the Kingdom of Fire in the Vampire Council meeting. It took another few months for the truce to be fully implemented.

Yunho walked towards the place where he used to meet with Jaejoong, all the while observing the white land spreading before his eyes. His eyes then moved over the magical fence that had been built hundreds of years ago to separate The Kingdom of Ice and The Kingdom of Fire. He sighed, remembering all the memories he had in this place, the times he had met with Jaejoong from behind the fence.

“Still here, fire boy?”

Head snapping up, Yunho’s eyes went wide as they landed on none other than Jaejoong, the prince. His surprise turned into a grin at the knowing glint in the other’s blue eyes.

“Well… I was waiting for my ice boy.”

“You still think I’m yours. How pathetic.”

Yunho chuckled, taking a step forward. “We’re not enemies anymore.”

“No we’re not.” Jaejoong agreed.

“Are we friends then?”

“Hmm, are we?”

Yunho took another step closer. “You know, I wouldn’t say no to that. My friends, sort of, ditched me for one another.”

“Aw, fire boy has no one to play with anymore.” The prince replied, a teasing smile plastered on his face.

Yunho shrugged, replying in a low voice. “They have each other to play with.”

It was Jaejoong’s turn to chuckle and it made Yunho’s heart skip a beat. “Sounds like jealousy to me.”

“I think it is,” Yunho admitted, red eyes roaming over the other’s body.

His stare was met with an intense gaze from the price’s blue eyes. Jaejoong took another step forward, never breaking their gazes. “You know what cures jealousy?”

“No,” Yunho honestly replied. “What cures it?”

A smirk stretched across Jaejoong’s face. “Find someone else to play with.” He said, suggestively raising an eyebrow.

“Hmmm,” Yunho pretended to think, eyes going over the fence standing in between them. “I’ve never played with anyone else but you though.”

“Really?” The pale vampire replied, “Maybe we have to play together again, then.”

Jaejoong’s words brought a smile to Yunho’s face. He swallowed, trying to control the acceleration of his heartbeats at what his brain could only register as happiness.

“You have to come over though,” Yunho replied, turning and pointing at the land around him. “Wanna come? Who knows, we may all play together.”

After a pause, Jaejoong narrowed his eyes and then shrugged. “Sounds like a plan. I’ve always wanted to feel the Kingdom of Fire’s heat.”

Yunho licked his lips, feeling the double meaning behind the other’s words. “We have a problem though.” He pointed at the fence in front of him.

“It won’t be a problem if we take it down.”

Finding the other’s suggestion more than appealing, Yunho grinned and made a quick decision to go with the brilliancy of the idea. He cracked his fingers before producing a fire ball in his hand, feeling greatly excited, as Jaejoong’s hand created an equal-sized ice ball.

He smirked.

“On the count of three.”
