hi there. I thought I'd write a post on here, questioning the existence of live journal really. this may get a bit philosophical. see, I thought it was here so that people could write anecdotes of things that have happened to them recently/ that day (depending how often they go on here, in my case, not very!), good or bad, that may be of ( Read more... )

Posting to your LJ is more like making a mass email to numerous recipients which socially is often seen as a much more direct assault on a persons character because the way its written will more consciously address some kind of audience. Most LJ posts of this nature seem to be more the person ranting at a non specific audience (even if the friends list is controlling who sees it).

Also, because of the nature of livejournal's mass communication to a large group of people who can then all pass on opinions, a closer comparison would be inviting all your friends over at once so that you could make an annoucement and then have a huge bitch fest, except spread over a couple of days so that people have time to think up witty or callous things to say for the other persons amusement (often confused with being supportive or comforting to the one declared 'victim' of the scenario) or constructive comments. But most people would see that as being too melodramatic.

It's not comparable to a phone conversation at all because on the phone the speech would be spontanious, allowing for interjection or verbal reaction (keep in mind this is more limited than being face to face as almost 90% of human communication is non verbal). Both of these factors might make you temper what you say, subconsciously making certain aspects of what your saying more or less extreme so as to gain (or atleast not lose) the support of the person your talking to, which would surely be the ultimate aim of calling someone to tell them what a dick someone is.

I'm sorry for the length of this, I have very little to do at the moment.
