About:
DOGS’ 2005 debut album ‘Turn Against This Land’, landed them an abundance of love
from Radio 1, three top 40 hits, a dedicated following and a whole lot of critical acclaim -
"Britain's most exhilarating new band” (The Sunday Times) - but as Duncan from the band
explains, for the band themselves, the debut simply saw them, ”plucked straight from doing
live shows at the Barfly and recording our live set (writing a couple more tunes on the way)”.
Two solid years on the road followed and DOGS “changed from being the next best big thing
into proper musicians” continues Duncan, “all of us have moved on individually on our instruments
and that comes through”. The result is a second album, ‘Tall Stories From Under The Table’, with
as much conviction and edge as it’s predecessor - as well as many infectious tunes - but with, as
Rich explains, “a more diverse bunch of songs - the reactions we’ve had to playing them live has
shown that. One minute we’ve got people dancing, the next they’re almost in tears, sometimes
they start fighting. We never had a blueprint for this band. We let the five people that form it
take it in whatever direction we’re going at the time. Which can lead us fucking everywhere…but
that’s what keeps it interesting”.
‘Tall Stories From Under The Table’ was recorded with Steve Musters (PJ Harvey, Tricky, Tom Vek)
at The Garden (Miloco Studios), with long-time fan Paul Weller guesting on ‘Let It Lay’. Musters
worked with DOGS to get the right individual sound for each track. “We were trying to get away
from the punky and raw sound of the first album” explains Rikki. “We didn’t want to make an album
that had the same sound throughout. We have grown as a band and as people. The second album
reflects that lyrically and musically, an expression of many different experiences both good and bad”.
The three singles taken from ‘Tall Stories From Under The Table’ express this perfectly. The
exhilarating ‘Soldier On’, the riff laden ‘This Stone Is Bullet’ - (on the strength of which, MySpace
hailed them as a ‘Recommended Artist’) - and the euphoric latest offering ‘Dirty Little Shop’. Then
there’s the introspective musings and acoustic strumming of album track ‘Chained To No One’
(“so I’m half the man that I want to be, but is the other half coming on quite fast, will I wash that
longing man away from me?”), the anthemic drum build on ‘Forget It All’, dripping with gut twistingly
souring guitars and emotive, driven vocals and ‘These Days’ with it’s fired pounding drums and chugging
guitars. And lets not forget ‘By The River’, epic in it’s melodic, intricate guitar riffs and smoky throated
whispered vocals, building up over thudding, impeding drums and the gentle beauty of last track
‘Let It Lay’, with piano courtesy Paul Weller.
As Johnny explains, with ‘Tall Stories From Under The Table’, “we only had our own cruel judgement
to live up to, and we’re very, very proud of it”.

Comment:
