The ritual had been the same for a few years now. No matter how early Isaac awoke, he feigned staying asleep until the right moment to hear, even if anybody looking would've seen his smile.
The moments gave him time to happily reflect as always. He'd had a pretty good life, all things considered- the occasional bumps in the road of course, but nothing to kill his soul. Isaac was fortunate to be surrounded by people and love. He was blessed.
Right on cue, he heard little feet pad toward him and his eyes opened.
"Daddy, Daddy! Happy birthday, Daddy!"
