"I'm sorry, Drake," Adam whispers into the phone, grateful that the other man can't see the anguish upon his face. "You know I'll always love you, but-"
"But what?" Drake's voice is harsh and ragged on the other end, and Adam feels both gratitude and guilt that he can't see that face either. "What did I do wrong? Tell me, Adam..." which trails into muffled sniffs.
"Was never you...I'm too different now, I'll just bring you down...you deserve better, Drake." Oh, how his heart breaks.
"Adam-"
"Do you still love me?"
The answer is quiet, but genuine.
"Always."
