“Steal from the rich and give to the poor, eh, buddy?” the bartender asked Adam. Adam took a long drink and set his glass back down on the bar, giving him a menacing stare. “Well?” he asked again, a little less friendly and a lot more nervous.
“We don’t steal from the poor because they don’t have any money,” Neil said, snatching some peanuts out of the bowl. “And you shouldn’t eavesdrop.” He must’ve been listening hard if he figured out why they were celebrating. Maybe the guy was a snitch. He sure looked like one.
And Adam as Robin Hood? Sure. And maybe the crew could wear green tights to complete the ensemble. Wouldn’t that be cute.
Out of the corner of his eye Neil saw Tommy sidle up to the bar. Neil had his suspicions that Adam had hired Tommy more because he looked the part than because of his talent as a thief, but Neil had to admit he more than pulled his weight. “There a problem here?”
Adam slid his arm around Tommy’s waist, his face softening for a second before settling back into a cool stare. Neil was pretty sure he could still smell their last mark’s perfume on Tommy. Not that Adam cared: Tommy made good bait. Maybe better bait than boyfriend.
“Um,” the bartender said. He looked like he’d finally bought a clue. “I think it’s time for my break,” he said, stepping backwards as fast as he could. He ran straight into Cam, who’d slid under the bar to pour herself a glass of whiskey. Neil saw the bartender size her up. Like a lot of guys they ran into, he clearly thought he could take her.
His mistake. He landed on the ground with a thud, Cam’s boot resting on his chest. “Boss?” she said.
“Take him out back,” Adam said with a flick of his wrist. “Teach him why it’s not polite to eavesdrop.”
