“Duke.”

The word was unexpected. That it wasn't even said in a desperate voice, but one that was quiet and maybe a little breathless, seemed almost strange. It was out of Adam's realm of experience, hearing Tommy use that almost resigned tone. It was even more wrong that he should be safewording at all - Adam was good at reading Tommy's body language, at figuring out when he had to pull back.

Adam immediately dropped to his knees next to the couch, wanting to lift Tommy's face up so he could assure himself that Tommy was fine. He kept his hands to himself for the moment, not wanting to make matters worse, especially since he had no idea what was going on inside Tommy's head.

“Tommy?” he asked softly. He tried to push down the feelings of worry that were gnawing at him, needing to focus on Tommy instead of his own issues. He could do that later, once he knew what the hell was going on, how he'd managed to push Tommy to his limits while playing around the same way they'd been doing for months without incident.

“I'm okay,” Tommy said, trying for a firm tone of voice.

That he was trying to settle Adam's nerves didn't sit right at all, and he hoped he made that pretty clear with a quick, “Don't.”

“It's true,” Tommy insisted. He turned his face up then, finally looking Adam in the eye as though that would prove his point. The contact didn't last for more than a few seconds before his gaze slid away, suddenly finding something very interesting in the pile of the carpet.

He didn't want to talk, and while Adam was always one to respect a person's limits, that was just not going to fly this time.

“Come on,” he said as he got up, offering a hand to pull Tommy to his feet. “Let's get you dressed, baby. Unless you want me to run you a bath?” Adam didn't think Tommy was sore - they hadn't really gotten into anything that rough - but he could see the tension across Tommy's shoulders. It was going to hurt like a bitch if it went on for too long.

And if maybe Adam wanted the familiar process of setting the water temperature, finding the salts, and helping Tommy in, well, he wasn't going to beat himself up about it.

“Bath sounds good,” Tommy said. His fingers loosened around Adam's, but he didn't pull away.

Adam was glad for that, no matter how selfish it might have been. He led the way around the scattered items of their clothing, left on the floor where they'd been dropped, and into the bathroom. The fluorescent lights overhead were harsh, leaving them both blinking furiously. Tommy momentarily leaned into Adam, using Adam's shoulder to shield his eyes. Adam sighed, reaching up to thread his fingers through the hair at the nape of Tommy's neck.

“I'm going to run the water; why don't you take those off?” His fingers brushed against the elastic of Tommy's black briefs, the only piece of clothing he'd still been wearing when he'd dropped to his knees in the living room.

Tommy nodded, hooking his thumbs under the elastic. Adam didn't stay there to watch, no matter how much he loved the sight of Tommy stripping down. There was a time and a place, and now was not it. Instead, he turned to the tub, fussing with the water temperature for a few minutes before pushing down the plug. He was rooting around the bath caddy for the salts when Tommy stopped him.

“Don't need it,” he said, shaking his head. “Just want the water.”

They stood side by side as the tub filled, neither one saying a word. Adam wondered if Tommy thought he'd gotten out of talking about it, but figured that no, he must have known it was only being delayed. Tommy was many things, but irresponsible wasn't one of them.

As soon as the tub was full, Adam reached down and shut the water off. He helped Tommy in and then quickly followed after, being careful to move slowly to avoid sending half the water over the edge and onto the floor. Like always, Adam and Tommy fit well together, like two pieces of a puzzle settling into place. It was nice, being that close to someone, and Adam was more than happy to let Tommy have the time he needed.

Tommy was boneless as he sprawled across Adam's chest, his head tilted to the side so that strands of sweaty hair caught against Adam's jaw. It didn't take long for their breathing to sync, or for a soft sigh to slip from Tommy's lips. The adrenaline spike was no doubt starting to wear off, though it would take more than just ten or fifteen minutes of relaxation to get him back to himself. Adam wasn't the most patient of men, but he was willing to dig deep.

“It's dumb,” Tommy said a few minutes later. He skimmed his hands across the top of the water, watching the ripples as they broke against the side of the tub.

“Don't say that,” Adam told him. “It can be a million different things, but stupid isn't one of them.”

Tommy just snorted.

“Will you tell me what it was?” Adam asked. “I won't force you to talk to me, but I'd like it if you did.”

“You're not allowed to laugh,” Tommy warned.

“It's really not funny,” Adam said.

“You know how I haven't been sleeping well?” Tommy began. He fidgeted awkwardly, but Adam's arms tightening around his middle put a stop to that.

“Yeah,” Adam murmured, pressing a kiss to the side of Tommy's head. “Bad dreams, you said.”

Not brought on by any one thing, they'd been more of an annoyance than anything else at first. After a couple days of fitful sleep, they'd apparently begun taking a bigger toll than Adam had realized, if they were causing Tommy trouble.

“I can handle my shit,” Tommy insisted. “I'm a big boy. The dreams didn't even have anything to do with you.”

“But?” Adam prompted.

“It was just the way your hand moved,” Tommy admitted. “It reminded me of one of those fucking dreams and for a second, I wasn't ... here. You know?” He was quiet for a moment before adding, “I told you it was dumb.”

“It's not dumb,” Adam said, unable to stop his irritation from showing. “You were uncomfortable. Your head wasn't where you needed it to be, so you put an end to it. That isn't a bad thing, Tommy. It's smart.”

“Yeah, well....”

“There's no 'yeah, well...' about it,” Adam said firmly. “It's okay. And now we can move on.”

Tommy nodded, settling quietly against Adam and lacing their fingers together under the water. Now that Adam knew what was wrong, he felt a lot better, like he could focus his attention solely on Tommy without having even a small part of himself left to wonder. Pressing a kiss to the side of Tommy's neck, Adam tipped his head back against the tile and let his eyes fall closed, making a list of plans in his head. He was pretty sure they still had some massage oil in the nightstand, and barring that, there was definitely some lotion.

Soon enough Tommy would get antsy and want out of the tub, and Adam intended to spread him out in the middle of their bed and make sure none of that tension had a chance to come back.

[End - I made a mistake with the first header. It is not 3 parts]

i love how Adam accepted any reason as valid for using the safeword.

:)

I figure being honest is key. Shit happens, you say something, you move on.

And then, you know. Massage. :D

i really liked this. kind of personal too because i get flashbacks to dreams the same way! (well, not the ~same same way but like when you're mad at someone after you had a dream fight with them)

Sometimes it's the strangest things that can make you remember those kinds of dreams. I get it once in awhile, too.

Glad you liked the fic. :)

Great fic!

I know how Tommy feels, I had this dream that my SO was being really cutting cruel to me, verbally, emotionally, just slashing into me... and when I awoke, I immediately hit him on the shoulder - hard!

Luckily, the alarm went off right then, and he awoke, startled, and (probably) thought he'd dreamed it, too.

I felt dumb, for sure... but it felt so *real*...

I've been there too, once going as far as to smack a boyfriend with my cast. Um... Oops? Haha.

Thanks for reading!
