Yesterday at school, I spent a lot of time helping around with the donations and shit. We had huge boxes filled with clothes, canned tunna, beans, bags of pasta and tensils and sugar and salt and all kinds of shit. We were making little personal bags with a few bottles of water, a bag of each essential, toilet paper, matches, a torch, all these things that had been donated to send for the earthquake victims down in Chincha and around Pisco and wherever else.

These bags were VERY heavy. It was real fucking exhausting, but I spent most of the day helping out, like a lot of other people from my class. I found that I was really keen on this thing: Missing a bag of rice or salt in one of the bags meant an entire home had no rice to eat or no salt to cook with, for an entire week. A lot of people depended on what I put on each little plastic bag. It seriously put things into perspective.

What really got me, though, was that while I and all these other people were packing shit and sending it out and sweating and trying to catch our breath, there was some dude behind me, just standing there. Just standing there and taking pictures. I wanted to just leave my bags and tell him to piss off with the fucking camera, to actually get down and help us, because there were some people here who cared more about helping than they did about saying they had helped. It just figures my school would turn a national tragedy into a PR deal.
