- like smoke
- like burning garbage, in places
- like farts, faintly
- like pee / fish-pee
- like good things cooking, in places
- like nothing
sometimes the sky is completely white, sometimes the air 100 feet away is completely white and no buildings are visible. sometimes the sky is completely white and you can see, faintly, wan buildings in the haze and gray tree branches. sometimes out the classroom windows everything is white and you can see nothing at all. sometimes the sky is white and for a second or two you can stare directly at the sun, which looks like a white-hot moon.
yesterday I was walking on campus and I saw a red thing and a fire ahead of me. it looked like someone was grilling food at a cart with a small red awning. I got closer and saw someone walking with arms outstretched holding a red fabric balloon with a fire underneath, like a hot air balloon with no basket, about the size of a microwave. it was rising and the person let go and it floated up into the white air and kept floating. I couldn't take a picture because my phone was out of power. it floated at least 100 feet into the sky, above the surrounding buildings, and then I had to keep walking to make prints before class. some students were gathered around talking in Chinese and one called to the balloon in English, "Come back!" when I came out of the print shop it was gone.
