I was thinking about Godwin's Law a little while ago, which says that the probability of Hitler or Nazis being used in an argument online approaches 1 over time, and realized that even though it's meant as a semi-joke, the math is flawed. Over time, the probability of anything being mentioned approaches 1, so the definition needs to be refined. It seems to me that a conversation will expand its topics geometrically, as each new idea that's introduced will trigger a certain amount of related or cross-referenced thoughts. But since the idea behind Godwin's Law is that people are jerks and will pull Hitler into any argument whether it's warranted or not, that process could be seen as an exponential expansion. Each new argument possibility is compared subconsciously to the arguer's built in jerk-factor, and if the critical threshold has been crossed, Hitler is injected into the argument instead of a rational response. So Godwin's Law is really that the probability of being a jerk and using Hitler in an argument approaches 1 at an exponential rate, as opposed to the probability of any other topic, which approaches 1 geometrically.
I am so sorry for this peek into my brain, you feel a need to put yours through a vigorous wash cycle. Like my pants, which are now wrinkled from lack of folding, because I was thinking about this.
On another note, I get blueberry pie and waffles for breakfast tomorrow, in that order!
