I'm hardly surprised that people would be fooled by this pretense of generosity. But I assure you, you're not getting away with playing us for idiots.

And you. I was only silent because of Burn, but I'll make you regret what you've attempted. Face me before I find your mindwaves myself and plunge you into a living nightmare.

Unfortunately. These 'stewards' remind me of the Gobblers, how they act nice and authoritative and don't really tell you anything, just make promises and ask you to come with 'em. And they say adults are harder to fool than kids. They might even think what they're doing is right or justified, but that doesn't change anything.

Gobblers, Lyra? Hn. They're idiots for falling into that lure so easily.

The General Obliation Board. Mrs. Coulter's gang. They kidnapped poorer kids-lured, really, that woman can be charming and convincing when she needs to be, she had me fooled for weeks-and took them up to the North, to Bolvangar. Then they-they cut their daemons away- not that they let any of the kids know that. You're not from my world... so I won't try to explain how disgusting and evil that is to us. But the Magisterium authorized it, since it was all for the sake of ending original sin. I'm glad I burned that place down.

People believe things because they want them to be true. Or maybe they just come from worlds where secretive and condescending authority figures can actually be trusted.

Then either someone needs to tell them what they're heading towards is their own destruction or they need to stop complaining and questioning and protect themselves. When you're aware of the evils you're about to face, it's pointless to rant when you're going to do what you want anyway.

Do or die. It's the way things are.

Unfortunately. Do what needs to be done, and don't regret it. My feeling don't matter. I almost thought I'd left those times behind. At least Iorek's here. And thank you again for helping him during that heat curse.

And you don't think I've tried? But in what's different from then is I en't working against someone else's charm, I'm working against people's own hopes, as misplaced as they may be, and their homesickness, and that's a bit more difficult than what I've done before. It was easier when I had to convince people to leave where they were. I can give them the hard truth and a more certain chance of survival, even if it's away from home, but the one's who're going to be persuaded by that have already chosen not to go without my words. I'm going to help those who want to take action, but for now, there's not much I can do besides gather information.

Don't get killed in the process then. Only a fool will allow themselves to die for what is right when better results are gained in living.

Keith, have you ever met any gallivespians? I know that.

Perhaps that's another thing that merits explanation?

They were Lord Asriel's spies. They're very proud. They're also about six inches tall and ride on dragonflies. They have poisonous spurs on their heels, and their venom is potent enough to leave a grown man paralyzed for hours. The only conscious beings in their world are them and humans. Most of the humans of their world were followers of the Magisterium, and tried to kill them, so they were outlaws ( ... )
