Room 218, Thursday Afternoon

Jan 06, 2011 14:00

In a shocking turn of events that probably surprised absolutely no one, Karla was still in a fantastic mood. Honestly--and no disrespect meant to her boyfriend--most of her good mood stemmed from feeling free for the first time in a years. It was like a great weight had been lifted from her shoulders; the danger that had doggedly haunted her since ( Read more... )

Hayley was bored. She'd worked the early shift at the diner and her apartment was boring and there wasn't any movies she wanted to go see.

So she took to dialing random friends. The first number she dialed was Karla's.

Karla glanced at her phone and then pounced on it when she realized the display said 'Hayley.'

"Kiss kiss!" she said into the phone. "Hayley! Hi! How've you been?"

"I'm thinking of joining the circus," she said, completely honestly. "But you can't just do that any more. They expect you to know things. I looked it up on the internet. I mean, not that the last circus I ever heard of ended well, or I'm thinking about anything clown related, I just..."

She sighed dramatically.

"Life is so boring."

"Circus?" Karla asked, deciding not to mention to Hayley that she'd punched a clown yesterday. "I'm not entirely sure I know what those are."

"You don't have circuses in..." Hayley's memory was failing her, so she settled for "your home? Unicorns but no circuses? Gee, that's one weird trade off. They're live... fairs. Filled with performers under a tent that perform to make people happy."

"Not with clowns," Karla said dubiously. "I mean, we have traveling performers, like singers and acting troupes and whatnot. But I feel like that's not what you're talking about."

"Well, it's sorta like that. But in a tent, with a ring and stuff," Hayley said. "Robin used ta be in one of those, but then his family all got... oh, I probably shouldn't say that, should I? I mean, there's people there that are sort of... forget I said anything! Nobody ever dies at the circus!"

"People die at the circus?!" Karla asked, scandalized.

Sorry Hayley. Smooth you were not.

"Only when evil, amazing, dreamy crime lords have a point to make," Hayley said quickly. "I... I didn't just say dreamy, did I?"

She'd been thinking about Bianca again. Living on her own... wasn't so good for Hayley's mental state.

"You did," Karla said softly. "Hayley, how're you doing? I mean, for real? I'm sorry I haven't had a chance to come visit. Thing's've been kind of crazy? But that's not a good enough excuse."

"It's lonely out here," Hayley said. "I know I could just stop by at any time, but it's just... I don't know, it feels weird to come back to the island, sometimes. Even if that Jessica at Caritas is one pretty lady."

There was a sigh.

"And a vampire," Karla needed to point out quickly. "But, yes, very pretty." She was about to mention that she'd spent Christmas with Jessica in Louisiana, but that just brought up guilt about how Hayley probably spent her Christmas. "But we should hang out together sometime," she said instead. "On my side of the Causeway or yours. Though this side is the only one where we can go to the bar."

Karla realized she'd been wondering something for awhile and finally decided to ask. "Hayley, why didn't you stay on the island and get a job waitressing here?"

Hayley hesitated, but she knew she had to tell the truth.

"I needed to get away," Hayley said. "I needed... after everything back in Gotham, I just wanted to try and forget it all. Maybe it wouldn't scare me any more if I got away from everything that'd remind me, you know?"

Karla was pretty sure that wasn't how it worked, but who was she to argue with Hayley for trying?

"Is it working?" she asked instead, as gently as she could.

"...no," Hayley said. "It might be worse, actually, cause I got no one to distract me."

"It's hard to run from something like that," Karla said. "It hides and sneaks up on your when you least expect it. What happened to you was traumatic, Hayley. The ability to just get over it would be far more worrying for us than not," she added. "Do you want to talk about it?"
