After discovering that
Mooner was indeed dead and yet had still come back to visit somehow, Karla had stumbled back to her room, mind awhirl. Was that why she'd been dreaming of her parents all week? Was that what that voice had meant when it whispered, "if you dream them, they will come"? Could they, perhaps, even be waiting in her room right then, waiting for her?
She practically dashed to her room, flinging open the door, face wreathed with smiles of welcome--
--to find it as empty as she'd left.
She'd stayed up, waiting, almost all night. No one. Nothing. Radio mentioned other people having visitors, but no one arrived for Karla.
Aching and crying bitter tears, Karla had finally fallen into a fitful sleep, just before dawn.
Several hours later, however, two figures showed up outside her dorm room door. One of them tried the knob; it turned easily at his touch, and the door swung open.
