It would be safe to assume that Karla had been looking forward to this all day. Even the fun of gossiping with her friends as they got ready for the prom wasn't enough to drown out the background anticipation of their first real and official date.
(The Desperation Day Dance didn't count. They had very carefully not defined that, for some reason that surely made sense at the time. )
Karla showed up a bit early, piling blankets and pillows up so they'd have somewhere comfy to sit. George was bringing most of the food, but she'd grabbed a big bag of marshmallows to roast if they decided on a fire, and there was a quarter-sheet cake prominently displayed in the center of the blankets and two wrapped presents nearby.
Who needed prom when they could have an evening on the beach instead?
[For one, please. Up early for anticipated prom-induced SP and LJ-failure!]
