Room 218, Monday Afternoon

Sep 14, 2009 14:31

Karla was in her room again, trying to decide where to hang her new paintings that she'd gotten from Sophie's gallery. Circle of Trust was probably going to hang above her desk, but she wasn't sure where to hang Stardust. The painting was amazing and would look lovely at the head of her bed, but she wouldn't be able to look at it while she was ( Read more... )

Dinah was done with class, and Fencing Club wasn't for a few more hours, so she wandered downstairs to Karla's room and flopped on her bed. "Hi. How're you doing?"

"Hi Dinah!" Karla said, beaming down at her. "I'd be doing better if I knew where to put this painting. Hey! I bought paintings! What do you think?"

Dinah turned to look at them, and had to say, "Preeeetty. That one looks like moons and planets seen from a space shuttle. Do you need help?" She sat up and looked around. "You could put it over your desk? I need to put up some more stuff in my room to keep the Gotham cityscape company."

"I'm going to put the other one there," Karla said, pointing at Circle of Trust. "There was another awesome painting down at the gallery. It was this really cool, fractal building. Maybe it would look good next to Gotham? Keep a kind of nifty architectural theme going? I was thinking about getting that one, too, but Sophie suggested I stick with just these two for now, so if you want it, it's up for grabs."

Karla really had paid attention to Sophie's lesson. It was just going to take some time to percolate.

"Cool, maybe I'll go down there this week, after classes are done. Ooo, I like that one too," she added, looking at it sideways. "Another building-scape would be awesome, yeah."

When Dinah saw the prices on those paintings, she was going to end up looking like an anime' character for a while.

"How are things going with you? Did you try out for the play yet?" Dinah reached one toe out to poke at Karla. "And hey. I talked to Tahiri about some stuff."

"You should go down," Karla said, nodding. "Sophie's really nice. She helped me with my makeup, remember? During the play? So I didn't look stupid? I hope she's in the next play, too. And I'm trying out this week, now that I know a little more about the play. And even if you don't buy any, it's just fun to go in and wander around. It's a lovely exhibit."

In Karla's defense, Dinah was already acquainted with her slightly extravagant view of the world.

Karla was trying to figure out where to best hang the painting, so it took a few moments for her to process what Dinah had just said. "You did?" she asked, striving for casual while she put the painting down. "Anything interesting come up?"

"I might do that. She seemed nice this summer, I just really didn't get to talk to her much. Leto took one of her classes." Dinah swallowed a grin. "About art. And how to protect it." And steal it. He'd been outraged.

"Yeah. Tahiri told me that you're helping her with 'guest.'" Dinah held up her hands as she said it and added, "Not asking for details. I've known about her for a while. But just... so you know. Tahiri asked me to keep an eye on her too."

Karla would be heart-broken not to have taken that class, once she heard what it truly was. Especially since she had been stuck with Rimmer instead.

She sat down on the bed next to Dinah, looking relieved. "I'm glad you know," she said, reaching for Dinah's hands. Just for comfort, though she did use Craft to close the door. "And that you're keeping an eye on her, too. Did she mention the salle?"

"Yeah, she did." Dinah squeezed her hand. "Sounded like it got pretty scary there for a couple minutes. For all of you. Worse for Tahiri waking up not knowing, but... you okay?"

"I'm fine," Karla said, using her free hand to massage the bridge of her nose. "I was never in any real danger. I let Tahiri watch my memory of the event, just so she would know, but she couldn't bear to watch the entirety. Poor thing. This is...not going to be easy. At all."

"Yeah, I figured. She's had a lot of crap to deal with anyway, and now her passenger's getting louder--" Dinah shook her head, and sighed. "Is there stuff that can be done? Somehow? Tahiri didn't even understand all of what those Vong guys did to her. Can you-- undo it, somehow? Or counteract it, make her stronger again, something." She bit her lip. "Not that I'm expecting you to fix it. But I trust you with her more than most people who'd be trying to help."

That got Dinah a warm smile, a hug, and a rush of gratitude. "The problem is," she said, drawing back and looking worriedly at Dinah, "that it isn't something that can be fixed, exactly. She can't just vanish." Karla bit her lip, trying to be clear but not oversharing, either.

"What the Vong did was force Tahiri to create another aspect of herself. She splintered off a bit of herself and turned it into the creation that they wanted. If she had been some kind of creepy alien weapons system or something--" err, never mind, "--it would be one thing. But Riina really is Tahiri, just a part that has been twisted into unrecognizability. She can't be excised, she can only be synthesized with the rest of her."

"Hunh." Dinah thought about that, after returning Karla's hug, thinking. "Okay, we're way outside of anything I know, then. Have you ever seen anything like this before?" she asked tentatively. "When you were in training?"

My, that painting sure was fascinating!

"Yes," Karla said quietly, eyes fastened to Circle of Trust. "After I can home to the estate. Only a few times and I was never the ranking Healer or Black Widow. It's rarely ever something that's forced, like Tahiri's was. It usually happens to people to divorce themselves from trauma. A new personality emerges and whatever happened, happened to them. So the main person can keep functioning. Going into those memories...living those memories...making them relive those memories...it's really rough, Dinah."

It sounded like what little Dinah had ever heard of multiple personalities; but that was all from movies or books, and probably nothing all that helpful. "I'm sorry it's putting a toll on you and Tahiri." She sighed. "Is there anything I can do to help? I mean. I would if I could, but I don't expect there's anything with the healing you're doing that I can really much use with. But to help you, after? Or help Tahiri, day-to-day? I hate knowing she's scared like this."

"I will almost certainly need to drink a lot," Karla muttered. "In a web, I'll experience her memories as my own. I mean, I know they aren't mine, but it will take some time to divorce those memories from my Self. Just having you be there, for either of us, will be good."
