I know you, I walked with you . . .

Last Friday, shadows and I went to the Met Opera House to see ABT's Sleeping Beauty. The reviews for this ballet have been really bad. I liked it for the most part. The second act was a mess and the prince's dream sequence was boring and muddled that I was distracted enough to look around and noted that more than a few people nodding off. A lot of the ABT's restaging worked, but when it didn't,  it was god awful!

Our Aurora was Irina Dvorovenko, who was a subtle and thoroughly lovely sleeping princess. And I got a kick seeing Gelsey Kirkland as Carabosse. I was surprised that she was as petite as she was..., the only people shorter than she on the stage were the little pages. And Act III's Grand Pas de Deux was really something to behold. Really inspiring.

This outing was "sponsored" by my Time Out NY preview on the ballet. I hate that--for every principal dancer, there is a sponsor. Very weird. My TONY piece was middling, but it did score two press seats for the night.

When I was researching for this piece, Greg and I talked about Sleeping Beauty. Even among the Disney princesses, Aurora is special--the über princess, if you will. First, she has blonde hair and blue eyes. She was born a princess, and not married into role.

And it was the first time I've ever been to the Met at LC. I would dearly love to experience an opera there.
