Summary: Ava helps Ashlee understand Doris’s attraction to women
A/N: Assumes that Doris has told Ashlee she’s gay, which she totally should, in my opinion!
A/N 2: I know this is a little random. But I've always had a not-so-secret thing for Ava and decided yesterday that Ashlee has a sexy voice. And this just kind of jumped into my head after yesterday’s episode...
“Hey. Can I sit?”
Ashlee looked up at the sound of the soft voice, apprehension settling in as she recognised its owner.
“Sure,” she replied, more confidently than she felt, moving over to make room for Ava on the small bench.
Ava sensed the younger woman’s hesitation and smiled, slightly nervously. “Look, Ashlee, I know I wasn’t very nice to you last time I was in town. That stuff with Coop and the rigged election...” She trailed off, swallowing against the lump in her throat. “Everything’s so different now.”
Ashlee nodded sadly, tears pricking at her own eyes as she thought back to Coop’s funeral, then Jeffrey’s memorial only hours earlier. Jeffrey. Ava’s dad. She glanced over as Ava shivered and wrapped her pashmina more tightly around herself, the tension draining away as she realised that the brunette was no longer a threat.
“How are you?” Ashlee asked softly, her voice full of genuine concern.
Ava looked up and managed a weak smile. “I’m doing ok.” She shook her head slowly. “I still can’t believe he’s not coming back.” Her tone became a little brighter as her brow furrowed. “And I just had a... surprising conversation with Olivia.”
Ashlee grinned wryly. “Seems there’s a lot of that going around lately,” she muttered under her breath, thinking of her mother’s own revelation the day before.
The brunette turned, her eyes lighting up as her interest piqued, glad of the distraction. “How is Doris these days?”
“Almost human.” Ashlee smiled as she heard Ava laugh softly beside her. “Honestly, she’s a lot better than she used to be.” The blonde frowned suddenly. Ava had been digging up secrets on her mother during that whole election campaign. They’d even been close for a while. Perhaps she could shed some light on everything?
“She’s gay,” Ashlee suddenly blurted out, before she could stop herself.
“Doris is gay?” Ava’s voice rose a little in surprise.
“You didn’t know?” Ashlee reddened, her guilt at betraying her mother’s secret combined with a strange sense of relief that she hadn’t been the only one to have been kept in the dark.
The brunette exhaled slowly. “Wow. A lot really has changed since I left.”
Ashlee laughed nervously in agreement. “Yeah, I was talking to Rafe the other day,” she began, in full flow now, “and I guess he recently found out some stuff he didn’t know too.”
Ava nodded, her hands twisting together in her lap. “Yeah. My mom just told me about her and Natalia. I think it’s wonderful.”
Ashlee was halfway through agreeing before she realised exactly what the other woman had said.
“Wait. Olivia and Natalia are together?”
Ava looked confused. “You didn’t know? I thought you said...”
Ashlee waved her off. “No. I knew Natalia was in love with a woman. Rafe didn’t say who.” She paused and when she spoke again, her voice was full of incredulity. “Olivia is gay?”
Ava frowned, impatience beginning to prickle at her. “It’s not that big a deal.”
“How can you say that?” Ashlee’s mouth hung open, and Ava had to clench her fists to fight the urge to reach over and push it closed. “Our moms tell us they’re gay and you say it’s not a big deal?”
Ava shrugged. “They’re happy, right?”
Ashlee shook her head. “This is so weird,” she murmured under her breath. “I don’t get it, I really don’t.”
Ava watched the blonde curiously for a moment, then, her decision made, reached forward and cupped Ashlee’s face with her hands, touching their lips lightly together. The younger woman responded the brief contact, and by the time her brain had caught up with her mouth, Ava was already pulling away.
“What was that?” Ashlee demanded in hushed tones, more confused now than she had ever been.
“See, it’s not such a big deal, is it?” A twinkle of amusement danced in Ava’s eyes for the first time since she had arrived back in town.
“You kissed me.” Ashlee spoke slowly, her voice incredulous, her mind still processing.
“I did.” Ava almost regretted her actions, beginning to feel like she was speaking to a small child.
“You kissed me.” Ashlee’s finger trailed lightly across her lips. “It wasn’t...”
She broke off as Ava’s eyebrows shot to the sky.
“It was...” the blonde began again.
Ava regarded her inquisitively, but before Ashlee could find the words to finish her sentence, she was leaning forward and kissing Ava again, her hands tangling in short brown hair as Ava’s tongue ghosted over her lips and she probed it, ever so gently with her own.
When they eventually broke apart, it was Ava’s turn to look surprised.
“That was...” she began, but Ashlee beat her to it.
“Wow,” the blonde breathed softly, her eyes still slightly glazed.
Ava laughed quietly, quickly recovering herself. “Did that help?”
“Oh I get it now.” Ashlee nodded violently, her stomach still fluttering madly with the imprint of the kiss. “I totally get it.”

There was one person, however, who didn’t get it.
There was one person who thought the world might have gone completely mad.
And as he watched from the shadows a short distance away, the drink he’d been so considerately fetching for Ashlee lying spilled on the ground in front of him, Rafe Rivera found himself slowly putting his eyes back into their sockets and wondering whether men were even necessary in Springfield any more.
