Ok, I just wanted to get my thoughts out about the Battlestar Galactica season premiere that was this past weekend. If anyone is reading this that cares about spoilers, I’m going to be discussing them quite a bit. It sucks, I don’t really have anyone close by to discuss this stuff with. Anyway, here we go:
-First, the good. I thought the storyline with Dee was amazing. It really showed how the revelation about Earth affected the people on a personal level. I was truly shocked when she shot herself, after having the cute sweet date with Lee. But the emotions there were very powerful, much better than Roslin just breaking down.
-Next, there were many things that bugged me. Let’s get the obvious out of the way first. The final cylon is: Ellen? Really? That’s what we’ve been waiting for? I mean, that will mean a good bit for Tigh’s character, but not a lot in the grand scheme of the story. I would have liked a lot of different things better than this. I mean, I almost would have been ok with Kara being a cylon, if just to explain how she keeps dying, and the crazy mystery of her viper being crashed on Earth. Or maybe Kara and her Viper together are the final cylon! Or something. I think I even would have been ok if a new character (or maybe an actor from the old series) came out of the weeds as the final cylon, with words of wisdom as to how his society fell.
-Also, the revelation of Earth, that it was the lost colony of cylons. Bleh. It just seems to contradict so much. I mean, I thought in the beginning that the cylons were all “toasters” during the war, and in the 40 years since, had developed a model that looked like a human. That was the big revelation of “they look like us now” in the first season. And now we find out that cylons have looked human for 2,000 years? They just kind of forgot to mention that? Earth must have been a pretty boring looking place, too, if there were only 5 cylon models on the whole planet. Of which one copy of each made it to the colonies, just as they were being destroyed, and all of them survived the initial wave……seems a little crazy.
-I’ve mentioned it a little bit already, but in regards to Kara being magically brought back to life: I’m tired of it. Just tell me what the deal is, because it’s not an interesting mystery. It’s just dumb.
Overall, I have to say I wasn’t too impressed by the season premiere. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt, because there’s 9 more episodes to bring it all together. It might be one of those things where when I look at the season as a whole (and why is it season 4.5? why not just call it season 5?) it might all make sense. After having just seen one episode, though, I really miss the days when they were running for their lives being chased by the cylons.
