Ever since I started listening to electronic music, there were always stories of some techno-junky finding a choice piece of gear in the oddest location for an unbelievable price. There was Billy finding a Juno 106 for 40 dollars at the flea market, Tim finding a 606 for 30 dollars from a pawn shop, or Jo finding a 303 at a garage sale. I always discredited such stories as urban legend. Sure it's plausible to find a 303 for fifty bucks since not many people realize what the machine is worth but it's not 1989 anymore and the demand largely outweighs the supply.
Reality Check:
Two days ago a coworker of mine told me that he needed to sell off some of his production gear as he would be moving to California within the week. He mentioned having a Wurlitzer that he'd unload for fifty dollars since he picked it up at Goodwill and didn't feel like lugging it along with him. As I was pulling into his drive way that evening I assumed that it would have been one of the less than impressive practice model Wurlitzers designed to teach piano classes. There was no way he had bought the same keyboard that was used by Portishead, Air, and Prefuse 73 at Goodwill. There was no way he was selling a keyboard that was nearly 30 years out of production for fifty dollars. . .
To make a long story short I don't have that fifty anymore but I do have a wurlitzer 200a. What a fucking amazing synth! I've been sitting around playing Air & Portishead tracks for the last two days. Someone stop me before I release a cover album.
