So, I'm doing a ridiculously obscene project for my Transitional Justice class this semester in which I have to read every book, article, or bathroom graffiti that I can find about about the 1949 Elections in West Germany. This is a quote out of a book I'm currently reading that was written in 1953.
"In Western Germany, the election experience of the Postwar years has been a democratic experience; candidates have been freely nominated and have freely campaigned for office. The elections in which they have sought support have been free elections, efficiently and honestly administered.
In Soviet Germany, the pattern of elections has followed that so well known in other satellite countries- the first elections held honestly, but under considerable pressure on behalf of the Soviet state party, in this case the SED. Later elections, as in other satellites, have degenerated into typical totalitarian "roll-call" votes, with opposition parties silenced and the voters marched to the polls.
I'm a whole special kind of nerd, aren't I? It's just so awesome. Please, if you find this funny at all, let me know that I'm not alone!
AND it's late, and I might be losing my mind.
