My Review of the Concert on Wed. night
So to those who didn't make it to the 2nd to last waterfront Wed. It was awesome!!! Jeff Black kicked it off, with a great solo acoustic set. Theres something about a guy and a guitar, nothing else. So intimate, and one on one. Ran into a family friend I haden't seen in a while, between set's!!! Hi Suzette.
Then Tim Krekel took the stage and turned the amps up to eleven. As soon as Mike Murphy, and Don Adam's microphones were turned up, the party got started. The mover's and shakers got groovy and danced the sun down to it's rightfull glow over the 2nd street bridge. Krekel blazed through a set consisting mostly of new numbers, But played several old favorites. Most notably "All Night Radio", a long time personal favorite that I've never heared performed live by him, only Sam Bush.
Then after Krekel's encore, the stage hand's, in an act I've never seen before, stipped the stage bare for the main act. All amp. cords and monitors were replaced by 3 stools (which were never used) 4 bottles of water and three microphones. As Del McCoury took the stage, with a warm louisville welcome, the crowd (which from what I could see looked to be 75% under the age of 30) toked up and went nuts. At one point three young 20 somethings pushed me out of the way and crawled under the stage in plain sight and smoked up, while the band was playing. I was sorry to see that pot was such a major theme in enjoying wonderful bluegrass. I don't know about you but the music gets me high. I have nothing agains pot, but they were obnoxious.
Del also, eventually had to have his microphone turned up as well (this seamed to be a consistant issue). The band played a good bit of there new material with the exception of 52 Vincent. The crowd was rightfully infatuated with the mandolin picking of Ronnie McCoury, and the banjo playing of Rob McCoury. The three married women standing next to me, right against the stage, kept arguing over who the cute fiddle player was indeed looking at, which wasen't hard to tell, considering one of them was leaning over on the stage bra less! When it came time to shout requests, I yelled my suggestion of "What a Waste of Good Corn Liquor" so the women could here the fiddle player(Jason Carter) sing. Dell yelled out "O we got a Corn Liquor fan huh?" And I said "Hell Yeah". They played the song for me and flew through a few more favorites, including "Blue Moon" and "Raw Hide". Then they slowed down with there new Gospel tune "I Never Knew Life". Which is, very moving, and absolutely beautiful. The crowed was treated with a 3 song encore, and then it was time to go home. I couldent leave so soon though, luckily I was able to catch Del and Ronnie before the hopped on there bus. I Got a great firm handshake from Del as I expressed my thanks for playing Louisville so many times in the recent past. I also had Ronnie autograph my mandolin T-shirt, which is already signed by Sam Bush, as well as Chris Thile from Nickle Creek
