The feedback and comments have been great and feed the muse. Hope you enjoy it.
This is the last part of the story. I hope you all enjoyed it. The whole story is a little over 55,000 words.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Chapter 30
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Jack slapped at the hand
holding the smelling salts.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Get that away from me.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“It’s about time you woke
up.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Ianto?”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Who else?”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Jack struggled to sit up.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Just stay there for
now,” the Ianto voice said, from beside him. “I’ll get you a glass of water.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">The way his head was
pounding out the 1812 overture he had no trouble following orders. He slowly
opened his eyes. He was in the sitting room, on the chesterfield. He didn’t
want to look at Ianto, afraid he had finally lost his mind. Man was never
supposed to live forever; his mind couldn’t deal with it and losing Ianto.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">He could hear a few
glasses tinkling from the wet bar. “How are you feeling? I’ve never known you
to faint when you’ve been expecting before.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Say what? Expecting,” he
gasped, his hand going to his stomach. There was no missing the baby bump. He
was probably five months along. He looked down at the end of the room. It sure
as hell looked like Ianto, sounded like Ianto but his Ianto was gone.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Ianto?”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Yes, Jack,” Ianto said
turning around to come and sit next to Jack. “Are you sure you should be
sitting up?”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Y...yeah,” he stammered,
taking the glass of water. He guzzled it down.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Take it easy or it’s
going to be coming back up. Don’t think, Jeeves will be too happy having to
clean that up.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Don’t you mean...” The
name was on the tip of his tongue.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Ianto took the glass from
his hand. He ran a cool hand across Jack’s brow. “Do you want me to call Doctor
Vargas? It wouldn’t take her more than a few minutes to get here from the
village. She would do anything for her favourite patient.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Jack shook his head. He
looked around the room and noticed a wall covered with pictures of people. They
all looked familiar but for the life of him he couldn’t remember why.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Ianto, don’t take this
the wrong way but what the hell are you doing here?”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“What are you talking
about? Where else would I be?”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“You left. I just saw you
go. The TARDIS took you away with the other Jack and the Doctor,” Jack babbled
on.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Jack, that happened over
three thousand years ago.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">His heart skipped a beat.
He took a good hard, long look at Ianto, there were a few gray hairs and a
couple more wrinkles than he remembered but...
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“How? You should have
died a long time ago.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Ianto reached for Jack’s
hand. “What’s the last thing you recall?”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“I can remember the
TARDIS leaving. Then it felt like I was being ripped apart.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“What about what happened
when we were on it? Think about our trip back to Cardiff.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Jack leaned his head back
on the sofa. “I can remember showing you around her. She gave us this great big
room, complete with a hot tub. We got a lot of use out of that, didn’t we?”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Ianto chuckled. “We did.
What else? Do you remember her calling to us in our sleep?”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Jack frowned. He had a
vague memory of a song. “Singing? She sang to us.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Right. She then took
part of your immortality and gave it to me.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“I was furious with her.
I didn’t want you being doomed to a life like mine but at the same time
grateful that I wouldn’t have to watch you grow old and die. She was so smug. I
had gone to these great lengths to keep you and with one trip she had fixed it
all.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Snapshots went off in his
head; one was of Ianto stopping Owen from being killed by Copely by taking the
bullet instead. It had been his first test for his immortality.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Then there was Ianto
preventing Gray from killing Toshiko, so she could help Owen with the Turnmill
reactor before it went critical. Somehow all of them working together to stop
the 456 from taking any children.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Excuse me, sirs.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Yes, Jeeves,” Ianto
said, running a soothing hand over Jack’s arm neither able to take their eyes
off each other.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“I am sorry to bother
you. I hope you are feeling better Captain.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“I think so, Jeeves.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Then I have a small
problem you need to attend to.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Taddy. Daddy. Tell
Jeeves to put me down.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Jack looked down at the
wriggling mud covered creature the butler was holding away from his finely
pressed suit.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Are you sure that’s a
child and not a Frellian dung beetle?” Jack asked.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“It’s me, daddy.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Emyrs Franklin
Harkness-Jones what have you gotten yourself into,” Ianto said.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“I was looking for worms.
Daddy said we needed some so we could go fishing.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Shall I place him in the
bathtub, sir?”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Ianto sighed. “Please,
Jeeves. I’ll be up in a few minutes to hose him down.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Jack laughed. The five
year old kept them on their toes. He gasped as he remembered the day their son
was born. It had been less dramatic than some of the other ones.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Why did I let you talk
me into having another kid? We should have just been happy to be grandparents
to Lowell and Penny but no you thought you would like to hear the pitter patter
of little feet again. I think he’s more work than all of our other kids
combined and that included Gwendolyn who thought she would take the TARDIS out
for a test drive. I’m still not sure I’ve forgive her for that.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Jack pulled Ianto in
close. “Gwennie was only ten at the time.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“I was talking about the
TARDIS.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Jack laughed. “You love
having kids around.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Yeah I do but there are
some days when I think a dog would have been easier. I had better get up there
or he’ll have turned the entire bathroom into a pool. I want to redecorate but
not because of flood damage.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Ianto got up. “You’re
okay? The baby is too?”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“She’s fine.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“She?”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">A lot of Jack’s memories
about that trip to rescue Ianto were fading but he could still recall the
picture of Ianto carrying a little girl in a sling.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Let’s just call it a
feeling.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Ianto rolled his eyes.
“I’ll let it go for now. You rest and I’ll try and get the monster up there to
have a nap. It’s been a while since we got to make love in the afternoon.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Taddy!”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Coming. But after I
finish with him, I think I might need a nap too.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Jack stretched out on the
sofa. He let the memories sort themselves out while he laid there.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">He could remember the
first little boy he had with Ianto; it was a few years after the 456. Gwen and
Martha had already started their own families and he had been anxious to get
his own going with Ianto.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Once Ianto was sure the
child-stealing creatures weren’t going to come back and demand more kids he
agreed they could practice. Three months later Owen and Martha confirmed they
were going to be parents. Avon had been three weeks premature thanks to a
surprise attack by a Nurivian fighter pilot that somehow ended up coming
through the rift getting the drop on him. He had died when one of its stingers
got him but Owen had gotten the baby out first.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Avon was followed four
years later by Helina and Kassia. He swore after carrying twin he was never
having another child but fifteen years later after losing Lois to cancer of all
thing he delivered a beautiful baby boy they called Louis and a little girl
they named after Gwen two years later.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">After Louis and
Gwendolyn, they concentrated on raising their kids and grand kids and great
grandbabies and keeping the Earth on the right track so that they would be
ready for first contact and for the role humans would take in settling the
galaxy.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Many others came and went
from Torchwood three; all held a spot in Jack’s heart but none quite like his
first team.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Those first losses had
been the hardest; Susie’s double deaths, Owen stopping a Weevil from going
after a little girl. He had been fifty one. Tosh and their son Hari had been
devastated but they both kept going until Tosh sacrificed herself a year later
preventing another invasion attempt by the Gelth. Hari left Torchwood not
wanting to end up like his parents. He went on to have a great life teaching.
He got married and had a couple of kids.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Gwen, his beautiful Gwen
had charged in without back up hoping to reason with a Grazix. There had barely
been enough to give the Rhys and their three kids to bury. Rhys and the girls
had left Cardiff the day after the funeral. He had tried to keep an eye on them
but Rhys had made it clear he wanted nothing to do with Torchwood.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Martha had made it to the
ripe old age of ninety four, passing away with all her family surrounding her.
Mickey had managed to go out in the blaze of glory at fifty six like he always
wanted, taking down a nest of Polling frogs that were determined to eat the
whole city once their off spring hatched.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">After Lois died, Andy
went back to the police. He was killed by a drug addict holding up a pub a
couple of years later. Jack had made sure the animal had paid for it.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Jack felt each one of
their deaths like a weight around his neck and couldn’t help wondering where
they would have ended up if not for Torchwood and him.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Jack went to look at the
pictures on the wall.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">There was the picture of
their civil ceremony; Ianto was so handsome in his dark grey suit. He didn’t
look too bad either in his dark blue one. There were others of weddings as
well; Gwen and Rhys, Tosh and Owen, Martha and Mickey, Lois and PC Andy.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">On another wall he found
pictures with Alice and Stephen at the top along with many others. It was a
family tree. Stephen had married and made Alice and grandma, which had made her
mellow a little toward her dear old dad. Those last years of her life had been
good ones.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">But once they left Earth
they decided it was time to start a family again. By then they has lost track
of their many great, great, great grand kids. Besides, what was a few thousand
years between kids?
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Twenty years before
Emyrs; Rosalyn and her wife Engla had made them grandparents with Penny and
Lowell. The plan was to be content watching them grow up but Jack loved having
kids around and he and Ianto had more than enough love for a hundred.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">They all called Grai
Cmyru home but soon the little planet would out grow them and they would want
to go to school or go off and explore all that the universe had to offer but
for now it was wonderful to have his children and their kids close by.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">It was never easy to
watch his family grow old and drift away but they had been created in love and every
one of them had made he and Ianto proud.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Okay,” Ianto said as he
came into the sitting room. Jack stared at him, he was soaking wet.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“I thought you were
bathing Emrys, not having a bath yourself. Because if you were having a bath I
would have been expecting an invitation to wash your back.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“If you weren’t pregnant,
I would shoot you. As I was saying I have Em in his pyjamas but he’s insisting
on a story from you. He said you were telling him about a magic box.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Ah, yes, and the wizard
who lives in it.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Well you go tell him his
story, I’ll make you some coffee and I’m sure Cook has a few goodies she could
spare for you.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Jack pulled Ianto to his
chest.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Careful, Jack, you’ll
get wet too.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“I don’t care. I love you
Ianto Jones-Harkness.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Love you too. Now, go
tell our son his story so I can show you how much.”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Jack watched Ianto leave
before he gave the photos on the wall a last glance. His immortality might be a
cage he will never escape from but thanks to the TARDIS and the magic she worked
on that trip his cage was now a golden one made for two.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“Daddy, story, please!”
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">“I’ll be right there
son.”
mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";mso-bidi-font-family:>Arial;
mso-fareast-language:EN-CA;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">If asked if he would live
his life over again and do anything differently his answer would be no. He had
everything he could ever want right here.
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">~~\\~~
mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">The End
