Chapter 27

Jack was alerted to the stranger in the room the minute the door opened. He knew he had to act fast. He recognized the look in those eyes; it was one he had seen in his own mirror for a lot of years. It said, “if you believe in a God you had better start praying now.”

He had no idea how the Captain had found his way to Grai Cymru but he didn’t have time to worry about that now. He raised the blaster, he had started bringing it to their bed since the Doctor and his friends appeared a week ago. He fired, the only thought to protect what was his.

“Jack! What the hell have you done?” Ianto screamed jumping from the bed. “You shot him.” Ianto raced over to the body not bothering to cover up his naked body.

“It’s you. You shot you?” Ianto said in disbelief.

“He was trespassing.”

He watched as Ianto pulled the other man into his arms, rocking him. He felt his heart breaking as he saw the two of them together. He thought back to the time he woke up on the floor in Thames House all alone, the warm arms he had grown used to welcoming him back to life were gone.

“Enough, Ianto, he’s going to be fine.” He tried to pull Ianto away but the younger man was having none of it.

“Leave me alone. How could you shoot him? Did you even know it was him?” Ianto asked, rocking the other man back and forth.

“Of course I did, I wouldn’t have shot just anyone. We know he’ll be back.” Although there was a part of him that wished he wouldn’t be but that would cause more trouble to an already insane time line.

“That’s not the point. You of all people should know how bloody much it hurts when he...you dies.”

“You didn’t see the look in his eyes; he would have killed me if I hadn’t stopped him. Unless you’re saying it would have been better for him to kill me first?” His hand instinctively went to his stomach. He could feel the little bump. He should have told Ianto about the baby but there never seemed to be a good time, and with the Doctor being here it, it just made it harder to tell him because that would have meant telling the Doctor too.

“No, of course not but maybe there was another way.”

“One of us was going to die; I can see which one you wish it had been.”

“That’s not fair. I’ve never been very happy to see anyone killed before my eyes, whether they can come back to life or not is irrelevant.”

“It’s not to me. All I could think about was him taking you away from me. It seems like he’s already done that.” Jack pulled his pants on. He refused to turn around when he heard the gasp telling him his rival was back to life.

“Ianto, you’re all right. Oh God, I thought you were lost to me forever,” his younger self said.

“Not forever, just a few thousand years,” he snapped. He glanced back to see his Ianto being embraced. He stepped back into the shadows.

“What the hell is going on here?” The Captain demanded struggling to get to his feet with Ianto’s help. “Where’s the Doctor? What have you done with him?”

Jack saw Ianto stiffen and pull away at the mention of the Doctor. God, he had been such an idiot. He never realized until now how threaten Ianto had felt about the Doctor. He never had any plans to stay away from the young Welshman or Cardiff when he went off with the Doctor, perhaps he should have told Ianto that.

He reached out to reassure Ianto but the younger man side stepped both he and the Captain and went to stand alone in the middle of the room.

“Who are you? What have you done to Ianto?” the Captain asked Jack. “You keep your hands to yourself.”

“Was I really this stupid?” Jack asked Ianto, stepping out into the bright moonlight streaming into the room. “I’ve done nothing he didn’t want to have done to him. But I’m sure you and I could have a long chat about what Ianto likes to have done to him.”

“Jack,” Ianto gasped his face red with embarrassment.

“You’re...me?”

“Yep.”

“And you kidnapped Ianto, why? For God’s sake you didn’t even give him clothes.”

He wanted to scream when he saw the Captain pull Ianto to his side, covering him up with that damn coat. Ianto was his to look after; he sure as hell could do it better than this asshole in front of him.

“It’s a long story,” Ianto said letting himself be pulled close.

“No, it’s not,” Jack said, wanting to rip Ianto out of the Captain’s arms. “I saved Ianto from you. I’ve given him the life he deserves and the love he needs.”

“You’re talking nonsense,” the Captain said. “If he needs to be saved from anyone, it’s from you.”

“Right, and it wasn’t just a few days ago that you missed him almost being shot in the head.”

The Captain took Ianto by the shoulders. “What is that arrogant prick talking about?”

Ianto looked very uncomfortable. He gave Jack a dirty look; obviously it was supposed to be just something between them. But he needed his other to see that leaving Ianto here was the sane and safe thing to do.

“That night we went after the space whale. One of the gang pulled a gun on me, aimed it at my head. It jammed before I could get my hands free. Sorry.”

Jack rolled his eyes. “Shit, Ianto you have nothing to apologize for.”

“Can’t believe I’m about to say this,” the Captain said. “But he’s right. I have no idea how I missed you almost getting shot.”

“Watching the wrong Welsh ass,” Jack murmured.

“That’s enough out of you,” the Captain said, pointing his finger. “You’re just as much to blame as I am. We are the same person.”

“Don’t remind me! The last thing I want to think about was that you had Ianto and let him die like a dog.”

The Captain came at him but Ianto was in the middle before either of them could throw the first punch.

“Enough,” Ianto shouted, his hands on both of their chests in all his naked glory. “You are both old enough to ask like adults and not children on the playground.”

“Ianto,” Jack croaked. “This pains me to say but please put some clothes on.”

The young man looked down and seemed to suddenly realize he was naked. “Crap,” he said, grabbing for the pants he had been wearing earlier in the evening.

“You really don’t have to, at least not on my account.” The Captain’s quiet chuckle made the back of the hair on his neck stand up. No one should be looking at Ianto in the all together but him, even if his competition was himself.

“Eyes in front, Captain. We are far from done talking.”

“Another thing we can agree on.”

“Fine,” Ianto said, doing up his belt. “What are we going to do?”

Jack froze when the Captain went over to Ianto and took him by the elbow and moved him toward the door. He made a move to go after them.

“Whoa, Mister, slow down, you of all people know I won’t hurt him,” the Captain said, holding his hand out to stop Jack from charging. “Ianto, you can give us a few minutes to talk.”

Ianto protested but the Captain wasn’t listening he continued to firmly escort him to the door.

Ianto pulled his arm out of the Captain. “Give me your Webley.”

“What?”

“You heard me. You give me your Webley and you,” Ianto said turning to look at Jack. “Give me that damn blaster. If you two want to bash each others’ brains in that’s your choice but you won’t be doing it armed.”

“We have no intention of doing each other harm,” the Captain said, placing his hand over his heart.

“Speak for yourself,” Jack said under his breath.

Ianto stood still his hand sticking out, his foot tapping. You would have to have been blind to miss how pissed off his was getting.

Jack shared a look with the Captain. The other man gave him a shrug. “Fine,” the Captain said, giving Ianto his Webley. Jack wasn’t going to be out shone by the smiling bastard. He gave Ianto his blaster, marking sure to hold his hand when he slid the gun into his waiting palm. He let go only when Ianto started to blush.

“Don’t tell the Doctor about our new guests just yet,” Jack said. “We don’t want him interrupting anything important.”

“I’m not making any promises. If I start hearing furniture bring thrown I’m coming back and bringing help,” Ianto said, before leaving the room. He made one last statement by slamming the door shut.

“Now it’s just the two of us,” the Captain said with a grin.

“Cut the bullshit,” Jack said. “We don’t have time for games. The Doctor probably already knows that you’re here. I have a lot to tell you before you leave.”

“I have a question first.”

“What?”

“How pregnant are you, and what the hell were you thinking?”
