Chapter 18
Ianto smoothed down his tie for twentieth time. He figured no one in the village would have a clue what he was wearing or why but Jack had asked him to wear the suit. Jack even picked out the shirt and tie, red of course. The tie had a thick black strip and a red thinner one.
They had enjoyed the moonlight walk down from the house to the village hand in hand. Ianto was still in shock over the three moons.
They talked about nothing in particular. Jack had told him about a few of the villagers who first settled here over a thousand years earlier. Most of their descendents stayed on Grai Cymru. The whole planet had a population of five hundred but was increasing thanks to biology but also because of a few refugees that had found their way to them.
They chatted about the plants and trees that covered the planetoid. The more Jack explained about all the work that went into the making of Grai Cymru liveable, the more impressed he was at the length this Jack went to bring him here and to the incredible work the terraformers must have done.
He was a little ashamed of himself, he hadn’t had more than a passing thought of Cardiff, the other Jack or the rest of the team back in the Hub since he and Jack had made love that afternoon.
Jack took his hand from his tie, bringing Ianto back to the present. “Yum, I’m thinking the only thing that should be on the menu is you, Mr. Jones. I’m scared if I take you in there no one’s even going to notice me. They might even try to keep you from me.”
Ianto turned and smiled at Jack. The Captain was looking damn good in his blue suit with a white shirt and blue tie with flecks of red and green. He couldn’t recall Jack ever wearing a suit before but now that he had, he was going to get him into them more often. Of course, all it made him want was to get Jack out of it fast. Maybe Jack’s idea about not wearing clothing wasn’t so strange. You put clothes on to get someone’s attention so that they’ll take your clothes off, going naked just saved you time.
“You need to have a look in the mirror sometime Captain.” Ianto gave Jack’s cheek a gentle kiss. He didn’t want to start something they couldn’t finish. He wanted this date, even if it was a few thousand years late.
Ianto noticed the old wooden building they had stopped in front of; it could pass for the Rose and Crown back home. The thick glass windows had a wave effect, much like the lead ones seen in old houses.
“You sure we aren’t going to be too over dressed. Are they even going to know what we’re wearing?”
“What do you think we should be wearing? Nothing? I’m all for that but the locals around here do where clothes.”
Ianto ignored the leer. “It’s just after three thousand years; I would have thought fashion changed a lot. I don’t want to stick out. The last thing I want to hear is ‘oh look, there goes a fashion disaster. Looks like he’s wearing something from the 1990s.”
“Clothing is still clothing. People wear pants, and shirts, some people and cultures well less and some more. Come on, I called Llewellyn and told him to save us a table. Karris and Poppet are going to be performing and tables are going to be hard to fine.”
Ianto gave himself another look in the window’s reflection. He hoped Jack was right about how he looked. The last thing he wanted to do was embarrass Jack.
Jack told him the owner of the pub was Morris and his partner Harry but it was now run by their son Llewellyn and his partner. It had been in the family a long time.
It had first been built one of the first buildings in the village. It was constructed by Llewellyn’s great-great grandparents Sadie and Killian. They had been the lead scientist on the project but they’d had enough of working for others and wanted to settle down where they could work for themselves. They had been so impressed with the work they and their team had done that they had asked Jack if they could remain.
Jack wanted to say no but thought it his duty to offer a place of sanctuary much like he had found with the Doctor and the company of humans was nice after so long alone. Not that Jack visited the village often but it was nice to know he had company if needed or wanted.
Ianto had wondered if Jack had slept with any of the locals but it didn’t really matter, not in the long run. After everything Jack went through to bring him to this time, he would let him have his secrets.
“Come on, Ianto,” Jack said holding the door open. “These people have been waiting a lifetime to meet the person behind their home.”
“No pressure.” Ianto could hear music and laughter coming from inside. It sounded no different than any other pub back in Wales. He smiled as Jack took his hand and pulled him into the pub. The noise stopped once the crowd realized who had walked in. There wasn’t much room to move around in. Ianto figured there had to be over a hundred people standing silent. It was like being in a wax museum. Ianto was pleased to see that while a little overdressed in their suits, they didn’t stand out as badly as he feared. Everyone was wearing dress jackets or skirts. He did notice that there were just as many men wearing skirts as women.
A large man with red hair stepped out from behind the bar. “Captain, long time no see.”
The bear came over and gave Jack a big hug.
“Hi Llewellyn,” Jack gasped out. “Don’t break any ribs, okay?”
“Do my best. Who did you bring down with ya?”
Jack reached his hand out for Ianto. “Llewellyn, this is my partner Ianto Jones. Ianto come meet Llewellyn
Ianto’s surprise at being called Jack’s partner was interrupted by the gasped coming from the people gathered around. Ianto wished the floor would swallow him up. He could feel everyone’s eyes on him.
“Pleased to meet you, finally. I was beginning to think you were just a family legend.” Llewellyn shook Ianto’s so hard he thought it was going to fall off.
“You too Llewellyn,” Ianto said, trying to keep his voice from shaking to badly. He could hear a whisper going through the whole building, most seem to be saying his name with a sound of disbelief.
“Stop all the chattering! All right folks, as you heard,” the barman’s voice boomed. “This is the Captain’s Ianto Jones.”
A large cheer went up. Ianto looked over at a smiling Jack. “What the hell is going on?” Ianto asked.
“I’ll explain later. Right now it’s a celebration.”
“For what?”
“You. Llewellyn, get everyone a drink,” Jack said loudly. Another cheer went up. “Did you save us a table?”
“Yeah, you can use the one in the corner,” Llewellyn said. “Go sit and I’ll bring you both a drink.”
Jack pointed Ianto toward the corner. “What happened to the music?” Jack asked. “Kariss, how about you and Hovar play something for us?”
A young blond woman jumped up onto a small stage. She had a violin and was joined but a thin man with green hair. He had an accordion. “You’ll sing for us later, won’t you, Captain?” he asked.
“We’ll see. I have other things to do but I’m sure Poppet would do a much better job,” Jack said.
“You bet I would,” an older woman called out by the bar. “Once I get me drink.”
Jack threw his head back and gave a hearty laughed; it was a sight Ianto would never get tired of seeing.
A couple at another table waved at Jack.
“Do you mind if I go have a word with Leo and Halle? They have the property next to ours. They run a winery, and have been after me to sell them some of our grapes. Llewellyn will bring us something to drink soon. He and his husband make the best ale. The food isn’t too bad here either.”
“Sure, it’ll give me time to take it all in.” Jack gave him a quick but powerful kiss as he headed over to the table near the polished bar to talk to the couple. Ianto was still taking it all in, the way Jack had introduced him as his partner, and the way he kept saying our property.
He couldn’t help comparing this Jack with the one he knew back in Cardiff. He knew it was a bit of a slippery slope but he couldn’t help himself. This Jack was everything he wanted; he was kind and attentive. So far there had been no flirting with anyone else, no casual pats on the arm or shoulder, no sly grins as he made his way through the crowd.
In fact, Jack always seemed to turning around to see where he was. If anyone was a getting the killer smile it was Ianto Jones.
Llewellyn came over carrying two glasses, one was a foaming glass with a golden liquid, and the other looked like it had water. Some things never change.
“Here you go,” Llewellyn said, placing the drinks in front of Ianto.
“Thanks,” Ianto said, taking a sip of the ale. “Jack was right this is good.” He could feel how anxious Llewellyn was. “You look like a man with a question or two on your mind.”
Llewellyn pulled out the chair and sat down across from Ianto. “If I’m being rude you tell me, all right?”
“Sure, but after having dealt with pushy American tourists back in Cardiff I doubt you could say anything that I would take offence at.”
“It’s just that meeting you has been a bit of a dream of mine,” the redhead said. “I know it probably sounds crazy to you but the stories I heard from my great grandparents and grand parents about building this planet.”
“Your parents? How old are you?”
“Me? I’m around a hundred and seventeen. Me husband is a hundred and thirty two. I tease him about robbing the cradle.”
“Is that normal?”
“Normal?”
“Do you all live that long?”
“It’s the standard age for here. My grandparents were almost two hundred and fifty-six when they passed. Died within a few days of each other, guess they couldn’t bear to be parted even in death. They were just kids but they could remember helping plant trees for the Captain.”
“That’s amazing,” Ianto said, taking a long sip of the delicious ale. “Making a hundred is...was special back home.”
There was a loud whistle from the bar. Llewellyn waved at a black man with a shaved head. “That would be me hubby, Graeme, telling me time to get me ass in gear. I just wanted to say I’m glad to finally meet you. It’s weird to think that the only reason we have a place to call home is cause of someone from a long time ago needing a place too. Every generation hoped that they would be the one to finally meet the Ianto Jones. It’s hard to believe that you’re here and I’m talking to you. Tell the Captain not to worry about the drinks, they’s on me.”
Ianto watched the big man leave, and head back over to his husband. As welcome to the neighbourhood speech went it was damn cryptic. So far, Ianto found out that people can live for over two hundred years, and that they have been waiting for him.
“You okay?” Jack asked, sitting down next to him.
“Jack, these people have been waiting for me? What the hell have you done? I’m not some kind of messiah, am I?”
Jack laughed so hard Ianto had to grab onto his arm to stop him from falling off his chair. “Oh God, Ianto, no you are not the next coming. However, a religion where people worship coffee and wear great looking suits is one I would love to be the priest in.”
“You would have to be celibate.”
“I’ve always thought religions suck. No, Ianto I haven’t turned waiting for you to come back to me as the state religion. For one thing, we’re not a state here and second I wouldn’t want to share you with your adoring public. When I first got the idea of bringing you to me, and creating the perfect home for us to share I might have been imbibing more than my fair share of drink as well as other recreational products, shall we say.”
“Jack?”
“I couldn’t forget you but I was desperate to find a way to deal with the pain. When I came up with my plan most people including the rational part of my brain told me to leave well enough along but I couldn’t so I started asking around looking for good terraformers, and I found some. They weren’t cheap but I didn’t give a damn. After a few thousand years around I had a few investments that paid off and could afford just about anything they could come up with. I never had any plans to tell them why I wanted them to fix this barren rock up in the first place but I’ve never been a smart drunk. That’s how Torchwood found me in the first place; I was talking about what I was going to do to the Doctor when I found him.”
“So I’m what a legend or something?” Ianto asked, feeling a little sick to his stomach.
“I don’t know if I’d go that far. You’re more like the end of a wild romantic story. You are the long lost love of an immortal Captain.”
Jack reached under the table and gave Ianto’s leg a squeeze. “Look, I didn’t mean or even want to tell people about you but in a way I’m glad I did. As much as I wanted you all to myself I think I’ve done good here. These people have managed to turn this place into a home for not just us. In the last few decades we’ve even taken in a few refugees.”
Ianto looked around at the boisterous crowd, all singing, laughing and dancing. “Yeah, you have a lot of good here. I just don’t want to become some kind of side show.”
“At least you didn’t say freak.”
“Oh, Jack, I wouldn’t and I don’t think of you like that.”
Jack gave Ianto’s cheek a kiss. “I know you don’t. I guess I’ve gotten kind of use to being thought of in those terms even thinking of myself like that.”
“Well stop it. I kind of hate to admit it but being part of an intergalactic love story is kind of...”
“Hot? Kinky?”
“Sweet.”
“Oh that’s the death knell for us for sure,” Jack said with a grin. “Come on, let’s dance.”

Ianto stumbled against the door frame as he entered the bedroom he shared with Jack. “You shouldn’t have let me drink so much. I’m going to have the hangover from hell tomorrow.” Ianto fell onto the bed, not carrying what state his suit was in. He didn’t care if he slept in it.
“You were having too good a time,” Jack said, slipping off one of Ianto’s shoes.
“And I’ll pay for it.”
“I’ve got something I can give you,” Jack said, pulling off Ianto’s pants.
Ianto leaned back on his elbows, and looked up in Jack in disbelief. “You are unreal; you want to have sex, right now?”
“No, it’s medication, it will take care of the headache and nausea. It might leave you a little thirsty, but probably no more than usual after a night out.”
“Give it to me,” Ianto said, falling backwards. “I feel the room starting to spin. I can believe we managed to make it home.”
“I’m pretty sure I was carrying you most of the way.” Jack opened the nightstand drawer. “It’s a hypo-injection. You’ll feel a little prick and then sleep, so get comfortable.”
“I’m fine here,” Ianto mumbled. “Gimme.”
Ianto braced himself for the shot but nothing happened. “Jack? Are you going to give me the shot?”
Jack was staring at the silver cylinder. “What? Oh yeah.”
Ianto felt a sting then a warmth enveloped him. The last thing he remembered was a gentle kiss on the lips and what sounded like a prayer. “I hope I haven’t ruined everything.”
