Chapter 23

Tony smiled at Cynthia; sitting staring at the director’s executive assistant wasn’t the way he had planned on spending tonight. After waking up in Gibbs bed, he had hoped they would be making wild hot monkey love all night long but as usual fate had a way of biting him in the ass.

They both grimaced as the yelling they heard coming from the director’s office grew louder. He was about to make some smart-assed comment to the pretty secretary when the door flung open. Gibbs came storming out. He gave a quick glance at Tony before he headed out the door.

He thought about going in to try to smooth things out with Vance but he wasn’t sure he would be able to hold him temper any better than Jethro. Not that he had a clue what they had been fighting about but no one messed with his boss, or lover.

Hard to believe he was here. The afternoon had started out with a lot of promise. He had just finished talking to Ianto and was settling back down with Jethro for a make out session when Gibbs had gotten a summons from Director Vance wanting to talk about Gibbs’s report and how Harkness had managed to disappear from the NCIS morgue as well as Doctor Jones sudden return to England. Gibbs had tried to get out of it saying it was all in his report, and when that didn’t work he reminded Vance they would be in first thing in the morning but the director was having none of it. The next thing Tony knew Gibbs slapped the phone shut, gave a growl and was getting out of bed.

Tony wasn’t about to let Jethro go it alone. Now as he followed Gibbs down the stairs to the bullpen, maybe he should have stayed put.

“Are you going to tell me what he said, Gibbs?”

“Not here,” Gibbs said through clenched teeth as he jabbed at the elevator button. “Once we get to our place. We have a few things to decide.”

“Like?”

“I just said not-”

“I would like to have a vague idea how much time I should spend worrying on the way to your place,” Tony said, walking through the opened door.

As soon as the door shut, Gibbs hit the emergency stop. He quickly he grabbed Tony. “I said our place, and I meant it. Fine you want to know what’s going on?”

“Duh,” Tony said, grinning at the head slap. “I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t want to know.”

“I think I might be, no, I know I’ll be looking for another job tomorrow. I pretty much told Leon what I thought of him.”

“All because he was asking questions about Harkness and a British doctor?”

“No, there was a lot more going on than the embarrassment of losing a body and having the collar go to a dead foreign agent.”

“Like?”

“At first, he was going on about us losing a body, and bringing in a stranger to work with. I couldn’t exactly tell him about aliens being used to murder.”

“True, but we covered all that in our report. Everyone involved ended up dead in the shoot out. The bodies, well all but Harkness’ proved that.”

“As I told him but then it became him accusing me of being compromised and wanting to know how long we had been lovers.”

“What?”

“Seems someone slipped a bug in his ear about us. He questioned me about you and our relationship asking if I had been giving you special treatment since we’ve been lovers.”

“We haven’t been. Hell except for a few kisses this morning we haven’t done anything. Vance interrupted any chance we had of getting down to business when he called.”

Gibbs shrugged. “I didn’t quite tell him that but I told him he was talking out of his ass.”

“Really?” Tony squeaked.

“Then it just went downhill from there. He kept pulling out examples of me showing favouritism over you.”

“Like?”

“Choosing you over Ziva in Israel.”

“Did you?”

“I suppose I did but at the time I told myself it had more to do with not being forced to make choices. I don’t regret what I did.” Gibbs placed a gentle kiss on Tony’s lips.

“Me either,” Tony sighed. “What are we going to do then? He has no proof and he can’t fire us for being gay.”

“No, but he has already told me that he’s putting you in for a transfer.”

“He can’t do that.”

“He can’t demote you or refuse to promote. In fact, this is a promotion of sorts.”

“Not agent afloat again is it,” Tony moaned. “I don’t care if it’s on the fucking space station, I’m not going.”

“No, it’s Okinawa. Lead agent.”

“Japan? It might as well be the fucking space shuttle. I won’t go, Jethro. I can find another job around here. Maybe even with Fornell and the FBI.”

Gibbs growled. “Not without me you won’t.”

“I’m sure Toby would love us both. But I can’t deal with this right now. Can we just go home and think about this tomorrow? I’d like us to actually be lovers before we start talking about this.”

“You got it,” Gibbs said flicking the emergency stop back on.

They soon found themselves on their way to Gibbs’s bright yellow Charger when Tony’s phone rang.

“Who is it?” Gibbs growled.

Tony glanced at the number. “Ian. Wonder what Harkness has down now to piss him off?”

“Ian, what’s happening? Not that I don’t love talking to you but twice in one day is a bit much.”

“Yeah, I know but it was important. First, thank you and to Gibbs, your advice was great and second how soon can you get to Cardiff.”

Tony looked over at Jethro. “Cardiff? Why do you want us there?”

“What the hell is going on, DiNozzo?”

“Just a minute. Ianto, I’m going to put you on speaker.” He pushed the button. “There. Now what’s going on in Cardiff?”

“Jack and I are getting married in two weeks.”

“He works fast,” Jethro said, with a grin.

“He does at that,” Ianto said with a laugh. “But that’s not all. We want to offer you a job.”

“No, way,” Gibbs said. “You aren’t getting DiNozzo.”

“We don’t want just Tony, Gibbs. We want you. As many of your team as want to come. Things are changing here and with it, it will bring worldwide changes. So what do you say? Come for a wedding, stay for the work?”

Tony raised an eyebrow. “Well, you might be in luck; we were just talking about finding a new career path.”
