Home 19

Ianto took a deep breath as he watched the city move by. He had no idea what to expect from his friends when he saw them again.  He knew they had every reason to hate him for the way he ran out on them when he found out about his pregnancy.  He wasn’t looking forward to seeing Gwen; the woman had a killer right hook.

Jack had been working hard to reassure him that all their friends wanted was him to return home; even if that meant he didn’t come back to Torchwood.

Most of the flight back to Cardiff from Washington DC was spent worrying about Martha and the rest of the time he was busy keeping Mae occupied. So he didn’t have much time to think about what he was going to do once he got back home.

Now that Martha had been delivered to the hospital and into the loving arms of her husband his concern had increased tenfold.

He had told Jack that he wasn’t going to go back to Torchwood and Jack understood and was behind his decision to raise Maeghan as far away from the hub as they could get and still be in Cardiff.

As much as he wanted to see his friends he hoped he was going to be able to keep the promise he made to himself about staying away from Torchwood.

It felt great to be back in Wales. Even the familiar rain had been missed; though it would have been nice to see the sun shine upon his return.

He stared out the window of the car; he didn’t recognize any of the buildings. “Jack, where are we going? This isn’t the way to the hub.”

“I know.”

“Then where are we going?”

“Some place special.”

“That’s pretty cryptic, even for you Jack,”

“I know you’re worried about going back in the hub. I can hear you over here. You think that if you go back Torchwood will take over your life again. So am I. I think we both know that once we go back there all it would take is for some to ask you to make a cup of coffee and the next thing you know you’ll be down in the archives rearranging everything. I think that this might be a solution.”

“What might be?”

“This.” Jack pulled the car into the driveway of a stately home all covered in ivy.

“What’s this?” Ianto asked getting out of the car. The house was huge. It was two stories, had a thatched roof, and large windows. It looked to Ianto to be a couple of hundred years old.

“This is our house. Well, it will be ours if you want,” Jack said, as he was taking a sleeping Mae out of the back seat.

Ianto turned to stare at his partner. “What?” He wished he could be more articulate but that’s all he could think of to say.

“Let’s go inside, and put the little one down then I can explain, all right?”

Ianto nodded, and followed Jack up the flagstone path to the front door, the smell of roses and lavender wafting over them.

“The key is in my pocket,” Jack said, tilting his hip toward Ianto. He rolled his eyes as he reached into Jack’s pants.

“Even I know you aren’t that hard up, Harkness,” Ianto said with a grin.

“Don’t be so sure. You’ve been gone a long time.”

“You mean you haven’t since I left?”

Jack shrugged. “I kept telling myself tomorrow I would get over you and go find some willing body but it never seemed to happen.”

Ianto grabbed Jack’s face in his hands and gave him a hard kiss. “Love you.”

“Love you too, but our daughter is getting heavy. Now open that damn door.”

Ianto slid the old fashion key into the rusted lock. “Think you might have to replace this.”

“I’ve had that key for a long time,” Jack said, as they crossed over the threshold.

“Jack, this place is amazing,” Ianto exclaimed walking into a large sitting room. There was a fire going in the corner. There was the smell of lemon cleaner; indicating that the place was well cared for. He approved, there wasn’t a speck of dust anywhere.

“Let me put her highness down in the guest room and then we can talk. Why don’t you head down the hall to the kitchen? You should find everything you need there to make us a cup of coffee.” Jack nodded down a long hallway that led off of the great room.

“That sounds like a good idea.”

He watched Jack head up stairs with Mae before he went to the kitchen to explore some more.

Ianto couldn’t help but be impressed as he entered the old-fashioned room. There was a large stone fire pit; big enough to roast a whole pig on a spit. The appliances could have been at home in the most modern of homes though. The countertops were white ceramic tile and sitting there was his old coffee maker, and grinder. He smiled at his old friends.

He opened up the stainless steel refrigerator, and found a large bag of Jamaican Blue Mountain beans.  He quickly ground up a healthy amount of the beans and made what he was sure was the nectar of the gods.

He took a deep inhale.

“God, I missed that,” Jack said, coming into the room. “Watching you make love to a cup of coffee. It’s almost obscene.”

“If all you want to do is watching, then you don’t want this?” Ianto held up a cup.

“Give me that,” Jack said, playfully grabbing for the cup. “Come, let’s sit down at the table and I’ll tell you about this house.”

Ianto sat down at the oak table, Jack sat down beside him. Jack put down his cup and reached for Ianto’s hand. Ianto smiled down at the intertwined fingers.

“So, what do you want me to know?” Ianto asked.

“First things, do you like the house? There is a large master suite upstairs and three bedrooms. Also the place has a large garden, and a big yard for Mae to run around in. There isn’t a lot of traffic and the town and neighbours are about a quarter of a mile away. Not too far to walk to local pub for a pint or a Sunday dinner.”

“Jack, it’s a lovely house.”

“Could you be happy here? Here with just me and Mae? Can we be a family? No Torchwood?”

“How can you ask me that? I want nothing more than to be a family with you and Mae. But what about you? Torchwood has been so important to you for so long. Hell, for the longest time it was the only thing that kept me going.”

“Yeah, I know but it shouldn’t have been for either of us. This house was built a long time ago, and I had a few more modern touches put in just recently. Took some sweet talking on my part to get them all approved by the council. Originally, it was supposed to be a wedding gift to my first wife Elizabeth; she died before we ever had the chance to move in. I had heard a rumour about the Doctor arriving in Liverpool and took off by train before we even had our honeymoon. By the time I got back she had died from the Spanish flu. I shut the house up, headed to the trenches. Eventually, I returned but I vowed I was never coming back to this house. Then I found someone I wanted to make this house a home with.” Jack reached over and took Ianto’s hand in his.

“Oh, Jack, I want that but what about Torchwood. It’s not as simple as you walking away.”

“You’re right, it won’t be easy. Hell, I’m not sure I can completely walk away but Torchwood will always be there. But you and Mae won’t be and to me that’s more important than anything. I should have spent time what time Elizabeth had on this planet with her instead I went off on a wild goose chase looking for the Doctor. I’m tired of wondering what should have been. I’m going to lose you soon enough but maybe; just maybe a few decades of memories and descendents will help me get through the pain when that day comes.”

Ianto took Jack’s hand. He placed a kiss on Jack’s open palm. “Love you and I love the house but you have to be sure. There isn’t just Mae and I to consider. What about Gwen and Martha? I know you wouldn’t be able to abandon them outright. What if they called you for help? I know if they call me for help I wouldn’t be able to turn my back on them.”

“I have a plan. I think if we hired more staff, had regular eight hour shifts, with everyone taking their turn on the evening and night rota, then we wouldn’t get so lost in the job.”

“You mean have Torchwood be a job, not a life sentence?” Ianto asked with a cheeky grin.

“Yeah, something like that you smart ass.”

“I love the idea. Have you mentioned it to anyone else?”

“I did talk a little about it to Martha on the flight to the States. She mentioned that if there weren’t a few policy changes brought down from management that there might be a few openings.”

“Such as?”

“Maternity. Seems Martha was trying to tell me something even then about you but also about here and Gwen. Their biological clocks are ticking it would seem?”

“It would be nice for Mae to have a few playmates, just in case we aren’t able to give her that little brother or sister we were talking about.”

Jack got up from the table. He poured another cup of coffee.  Ianto could tell something was on Jack’s mind but he knew better than to push.

“There are a few more things I need to tell you about me, and about Torchwood and I’m not sure how you’re going to take them.”

“What could be more of a surprise than you can’t die, and you come from another time and planet?”

“I did say Elizabeth was my first wife.”

“You’ve been married more than once?”

“Three times on this planet and twice more when I was with the time agency.”

Ianto smiled. “Still less than Liz Taylor.”

“And here’s the big one. Mae isn’t my first child. I have another daughter, her name is Alice and she has a little boy called Stephen. He’s twelve I think.”

Ianto felt like an anvil had been dropped on his head.
