Hello & Rules
Welcome to the first Generation Kill Remix Challenge, potential players! Titled Two Turntables and a Word Processor, this is not your mama’s remix challenge, but she is welcome to come play if she thinks it’s a good idea. We wanted to do something different to try and inspire people in GK fandom.
So, how does this non-traditional remix thing work?
*A sign-up post will go up here in a few days and anyone who wants to sign up can do so. Sign-ups will last one week, in case you want to waffle back and forth for a few days while nightanddaze makes puppy faces about the challenge on her journal and passionofmind is super upbeat and smells like candy. You can sign up in two-person teams if that’s your thing. After you have signed up, please apply to join the community. Only participants will be granted membership. If you are just interested in reading when the time comes, then please watch the community.
*Once sign-ups close we the mods will try to find a single-artist album with the same number of songs as players, and barring that, we will find two albums with the right amount of people.
*You will be assigned a song (don't worry, it’ll be random and we'll email you a download link) to use as your inspiration. As far as this goes we want you to take as much or as little from the song as you feel like. Do something canon-compliant, do an AU, write all the pairings, or make it gen. Our core goal is just to inspire you guys. That being said, please avoid the dreaded songfic. They’re not really popular anymore, and many of you probably don’t know what they are, in which case you are very lucky but should probably look them up anyway to keep yourself in the know. We really doubt that songfics are gonna be a problem though as you're not fourteen (and if you're fourteen, what the hell are you doing here? Get out!).
*The minimum word count for this challenge is 1000 words and the maximum is 10000 (although we are not going to be incredibly strict here), to keep everything manageable and everyone in the same universe.
*You'll have four weeks to write your piece and get it betaed. In a bit we'll set up a post for people to ask and answer the beta call, but feel free to use your fancy personal beta if you’ve got one.
*You have to send in your finished, betaed piece by March 31 at 11:59PM(EST) to gkremixmods@gmail.com, complete with filled header (which we will post later for you to fill).
*We will begin posting the pieces on April 4, each with your filled header and a download link for your song. We will post at a rate of 1-3 per day depending on number of players, until all the pieces are posted. At this time we will set up a nice masterlist/remix album.
*Once we've done the master post, feel free post your piece all over the internet.
Who are the mods?
nightanddaze and passionofmind. nightanddaze has been around for a while, enjoys zombies, long walks on the beach and writing rules for challenges. passionofmind is kind of tall, loves dinosaurs and was, in a past life, a ninja.
Why are you not doing the normal remix?
Most remixes require people to have some kind of body of work in a fandom. GK, while incredibly talented, has a lot of writers who have only written a piece or two. This can make it hard to have your work remixed, since the remixer might not get much of a choice of what to remix. So we wanted to keep the inventive spirit of remix, but make it easier for people to get in on the action if they’re not prolific. But! Hopefully in the future we can try our hand at the traditional remix provided nightanddaze and passionofmind don’t get run out by a righteous mob.
What happens if I don’t like my song?
Uh. Tough shit? Sorry, but it kind of is. Listen to it until it ~speaks to you~ or write a thousand words about how much Ray Person hates that motherfucking song. He can wax poetic about it to Brad. And then they can do it. Or maybe he turns into a unicorn or something. I don’t know. It’s your story.
What happens if I default?
You default. You don’t get banned from any future challenges or anything. We try to find someone to replace you so the mix is complete. It sucks when people default but shit happens and it’s ultimately not a big deal.
So them's the shakes. Depending on what happens some of these rules might change, so feel free to throw in input. This is not the sign-up post. That one will will go up in a few days (Sunday February 20!).
