Soft Thorns in the Leather
Prologue

“Guy…” Marian’s voice was like a sound of someone groaning or moaning between her breaths. It wasn’t meant for it to come out the way it did. She didn’t know why she said his name in the first place. She was unable to find more words within herself. She glanced down at her hand that was hidden between Guy’s soft fingers. Her eyes travelled up his arm, across his muscular chest. The flicker light from the fire made dark shadows on the right side of his torso. Or was it the left side? Marian couldn’t think clear. She swallowed hard and turned her stare from Guy’s body. She had not expected this visit to be like this. She was here in order to make her peace with Guy. She did it for Robin. They had a plan - plans to save the poor boy that was held under the sheriff’s claws and destroy the sheriff’s plans. She had to leave.

Something moving at the window caught Marian’s attention. She turned her head towards the movements. Robin. He was spying on her. Had he lost his trust in her? Did he really think she would do something stupid?

Guy’s fingers tightened around hers - she met his eyes. They were in the colour of a stormy ocean - blue… and grey… and for now a little orange. His eyes reflected the flames from the fireplace. She couldn’t focus on both men at the same time. Why did Guy have to wear almost nothing? Did he really have to try his armour this hour at night? Marian could admit that she was a little stirred by him… He was a man, and she knew that he can be a good man too.

Robin’s shadows were still moving outside the window. And Guy’s breathtaking eyes came closer to Marian. She glanced at Robin - trying to make him leave by giving him a dangerous look. It didn’t work. When she turned her attention back to Guy her thoughts disappeared for a second. He was so close to her. She had to leave. Now.

She opened her mouth to speak but no sound came out. She was stuck in quietness. She didn’t know what to say! She had to make her peace with Guy. Guy was the only person who could save her from the sheriff nowadays. She knows that the sheriff isn’t a big admirer of her at all.

The sheriff, the king, plot, England… Robin… Guy?

Marian felt a burning fire behind her eyes when soft lips pressed against her own. She stared into Guy’s eyes. He was as shocked as her.

To Guy’s surprise she didn’t pull away. She stayed where she was… like she wanted this. Guy’s heart started beating a bit quicker as he deepened the kiss, pressing his lips harder against hers - making his tongue touch her lips. He closed is eyes. Even though she made this out of will… he didn’t want to see the fear in her eyes if he left his eyes open. She had misled him before. He wouldn’t be surprised if she did it again.

Guy put his hand around her waist - drawing her closer. He felt the fabric of her dress graze against his uncovered torso. She is not pulling away… She made no movements. The only thing Guy could feel was Marian placing her hand on his chest. He broke the kiss carefully and opened his eyes. He was met by Marian’s closed eyes… He could see that she had them tenderly closed. She didn’t even open them when Guy’s lips left hers.

Marian’s heart had skipped a beat when Guy’s lips covered hers. It was so unexpected. They had been through a lot since the wedding disaster. She had left him at the altar, humiliated him in front of all the people in Locksley and even a few ones from the nearby villages. She had hurt him so hard that she could actually see it in him just by looking into his eyes. Within the last few days he had built this massive wall of hatred towards her. She really thought he hated her… but now, she didn’t know what to think.

“Marian…” Guy’s vibrating voice made Marian’s eyes flutter open - he was still very close to her face. She could feel the warmth between them. It was either the fire next to them that caused it… or something else. She didn’t want to feel anything in this moment, but she could still feel something inside her body that made her knees buckle.

Their hands were made as one. Marian didn’t have the power to let go. She couldn’t let go. In this moment she had forgotten all about Robin - who was standing with eyes burning of jealousy.

Guy’s other hand remained on her hip; he slowly stroked the fabric with his elegant fingers. Marian thought his hand would burn right through the cloth. She could feel his every move. What was she doing? Why didn’t she just leave? She could, couldn’t she?

“Come with me…” Guy whispered softly in her ear before he took her hand more tightly and headed towards the stairs.

Marian followed him with wobbly steps and her mouth half open - not able to speak. She couldn’t do this.

Before Guy could put his foot down on the first step - his manservant appeared in the doorway.

“Sir. Sorry, sir. There’s a messenger from the sheriff.” The younger man said while looking down slightly. Both Guy and Marian stopped and looked at the servant. Marian was relived that he had come. If he hadn’t… she wouldn’t be sure what would happen.

Guy glanced at Marian and cleared his throat. “Tell the messenger I have other things to - attend to…” Guy said rather husky before he looked at Marian and grabbed her hand harder.

Marian felt a cold shiver slide down her spine. Goosebumps appeared when Guy began to lead her up the staircase…
