egocentric [ee-goh-sen-trik, eg-oh]:
1. having or regarding the self or the individual as the center of all things
2. having little or no regard for interests, beliefs, or attitudes other than one's own; self-centered
"Egocentrism is the characteristic of regarding oneself and one's own opinions or interests as most important. Jean Piaget claimed that young children are egocentric. This does not mean they are selfish, but that they do NOT have the mental ability to understand that OTHER PEOPLE may have different opinions and beliefs from themselves..."
...aaaand, might I add - may have different opinions and beliefs from themselves that could quite possibly, in some situations where there can be a right and wrong, be right... in which case, "oneself" is wrong.
oppression [uh-presh-uhn]:
1. the exercise of authority or power in a burdensome, cruel, or unjust manner
2. the feeling of being heavily burdened, mentally or physically, by troubles, adverse conditions, anxiety, etc.
"Oppression is the negative outcome experienced by people targeted by cruel exercise of power in a society or social group. The term itself derives from the idea of being 'weighted down.' The term oppression is primarily used to describe how a certain group is being kept down by unjust use of force, authority, or societal norms. Oppression is most commonly felt and expressed by a widespread, if unconscious, assumption that a certain group of people are inferior."
Let's all see if we can use these words (or its conjugates) in a sentence today =)
