He is probably the first experience of Kaoru actually being protected by someone else. With a painful year of living alone and isolated from friends and students from false rumours, Kaoru constantly fought each day to protect her honor, her Father's honor, and herself alone. Kenshin represents a future where she doesn't have to fight alone. He represents hope to Kaoru, hope that she could learn to live with people like she did with her own family she lost. When discovering that Kenshin was the Hitokiri Battousai, a feared assassin and legendary swordsman who was a prime example of swords that killed, Kaoru was florred that he agreed with her ideals. She could see that he didn't want to harm others anymore, and past the rurouni, even past the hitokiri that Kenshin would struggle to hold back in the past, Kaoru saw Kenshin. And Kaoru loved him. At first she didn't understand her feelings, but when Kenshin was n danger of not returning to the Dojo, she began to realize them. When he did leave, she was heartbroken. After some encouragement, Kaoru finally broke down and said in tears, "I want to see him. I really want to see him!" As a girl who constantly takes care of others and protects herself, Kenshin was someone who cared about her protected her. She doesn't know all of his past, but it doesn't matter to her. Kenshin is a part of her life, part of her home. If she can be at his side, if she can support him in anyway, she feels this is one of the greatest things she can do. Along with a few good beatings.

"I'm not going to lose either! "Misao is Kaoru's friend, and arguably, oone of her first good friends around her age. She also has strong feelings towards a man used to battle, someone who she's devoted to, just as Kaoru feels she is towards Kenshin. This connects them on a personal level, not to mention they both have simliar personalities, bright, cheerful, friendly girls who conveniently know how to kick ass when the time is right. Misao is a comrade, someone she could fight alongside in the battle of the Aoiya. She's someone who showed enough concern for Kenshin when Kaoru was in Tokyo that Kaoru could feel secure in knowing that Kenshin was taken care of while she was moping about. She can be a bit too silly sometimes, but Misao is easily like a younger sister to Kaoru, an someone she knows she'll have a lifelong friendship with.
