The Uncommon Reader (Alan Bennett) is an absolutely lovely little book. It made me smile a lot. (It also reminded me of the existence of the book Howard's End by EM Forster and that particular passage about Beethoven's Fifth, which I remember being very fond of but which I haven't read since, oh, my early teens. Hmm.)

Lovely is the word. So warm and fuzzy.

I had a major crush on both Howard's End and A Room With A View when I was a teenager. It might have been thanks to the movies and an even bigger crush on Helena Bonham Carter (oh, shut up) but they're lovely books.

I can't remember very much about Howard's End. A few bits and pieces here and there. It makes me want to read it again. As though I don't have enough to read already. But I should read more non-sci-fi! XD (The passage about Beethoven is fantastic and left a very strong impression on me. Actually, I think my mum made me read that passage first. Then I read the book. *laughs*)

I was at the local bookstore ten minutes ago, and was this close to picking up The Uncommon Reader. I decided not to since I was already carrying three books about 600 pages long each, XD, but if you rec it I'll give it a try next time I feel rich/reckless enough to go shopping for books again. *g*

It's a very quick read - I went through it in a couple of hours, I suppose - but yeah, lovely. Phoenix got it for me at Christmas. :D
