Hey guys, I was reading my old.. uh, one-shots? Whatever. I found one actually wort posting, circa 2008 :D
Enjoy, or not, and remember; it wasn't beta'd or anything.
If any of you don't remember, Derange (Adem Gray) is a heroin addict and Bob Torment is his boyfriend, who is studying at law school.
Adam sits by the window and looks at the key in his left hand. He hugs his knees tighter and looks outside through the blinds. Yet another sunny day in L.A..
Spinning the key on his finger one more time, he gets up from the worn out couch and walks around his boyfriend’s house thinking of a way to entertain himself.
He kneels down besides the piece of furniture that keeps all of Torment’s DVD’s and video cassettes and opens a drawer to reveal a collection of old cartoons that no one ever watches except for Torment and himself when he feels in he mood.
Adam looks at the clock on the wall one more time before taking out a random cassette and throwing it on the Vcr. Torment is late, he supposes he’ll watch the movie for the hell of it and wait for him; after all it’s still only 7 p.m.
The TV screen flickers on, shaky at first. Slowly the images focus and Adam watches as trailers and announcements from 10 years ago play on the beginning of the tape. The movie starts with a violin song, taking a sad tune, the screen black.
20 minutes into the story, the main character, a boy with freckles and curly hair loses his friend because he has to move.
No surprise there, kid, Adam thinks. They always leave.
He shivers out of the blue and rubs his arms looking around for something to keep him warm. The weather is warm still. It’s still Spring.
But Adam can’t help but shiver further, his body shaking soundlessly. He sighs as he remembers why he’s shivering; mocking himself in his head because of how long it took him to come to the conclusion. He hasn’t used anything since a few hours ago; he should need a fix by now.
If Torment was there, they’d work out a way to keep him distracted.
But he’s late.
Adam gets up and walks to the small bathroom, opening the medicine cabinet and takes out a small light blue box. He fiddles with his index finger through the many pills in it and takes out a small round one. He puts it in his mouth and swallows dry, putting he box back in the cabinet without a sound. He closes it and looks at himself in the mirror.
His face hasn’t changed in years. The same pale, sick tone of skin and the same reddish eyes, framed by darker circles. They’re black; as always. He fixes his dyed hair to the side of his face like it’d change a thing about his aspect and turns around, leaving.
Back in the living room, Adam shivers again but locates a blanket by the couch on the floor. He picks it up and wraps himself in it, hoping the sleeping pill will take its effect on him soon.
The kid with the freckles laughs before he closes his eyes and dozes off.
He wakes up from a vivid dream and seats up straight, trying to figure out where he is. He quickly finds out and looks back at the TV, which he guesses has gone static a long time ago.
The wall clock marks 10 minutes to 9PM. Adam turns the television off, not bothering to rewind the cassette or folding the blanket.
His shift at the hospital starts in less than 10 minutes, so he heads to the door.
Outside Torment’s apartment, Adam looks at the key in his hand for the millionth time that day and locks the door, with one and two turns.
He looks at for a moment before shoving it in his pocket and pulling the hood of his coat over his head.
He finds himself wondering if Torment will notice he was at his place, waiting for him since 4 in the afternoon. Probably not, he thinks. He takes a pair of aviators from his right pocket and puts them on with ease just before his body starts to tremble again.
He looks at his twitching hand and sighs, stuffing it in his pocket and heading to the bus stop.
