Title: Caught in the Act
Characters: Dani, Cassie, Nick & Ian.
Rating: R
Pairings: Nick/Cassie
Author’s Notes: Apparently the Sniff-sniper that is trying to take residence in my mind is named Ian. I’m losing the battle. I went back and forth between how to do this fic and finally decided I’d had enough of cute stuff. I needed some drama. Anyway, if people approve, this might just be RP. If not, it’s fun Christmas stuff!

With a roll of her eyes, Dani pounded on the door to Nick and Cassie’s hotel room. She didn’t know what the hell was taking so long but after waiting an hour and a half with neither of them showing up for their not-scheduled meeting she was kind of pissed.
“I swear, if you two are having sex again…” She pounded harder on the door. “Let’s go! Even rabbits stop to eat!”
She expected Cassie or Nick to make some sort of comment by now. They never slept in this late and wouldn’t let her make a scene like this. Scenes were memorable and none of them wanted that. There was a little twist in her gut, a feeling that told her something was not right. She pulled out her own hotel key and slid it between the door and the jam. The good thing about anonymous hotels, they were all cheap as hell. In a few wiggles, the door popped open and she stepped inside.
“Fuck.”
The room was trashed. Judging from the way the mirrors and windows were cracked, a Bleeder had been here. Division had found them which meant they were either on the run or captured. Either way she didn’t have much time. Dani grabbed a t-shirt off the floor, shoved it in her bag and walked out.
She didn’t take out her cell phone until she was on the street. “Ian, I need a track. Meet me when you can.”
Dani kept walking the back streets of Vegas, ducking down alleys, steadily getting herself lost without looking at street signs. If there was one city she could get lost in without worry, it was Vegas. When she ducked behind a laundry mat Ian was waiting for her.
“What’s wrong?” he asked.
She checked to make sure his rifle was shoulder behind him before she pulled the shirt out of her bag. Even if they had a sort of understanding, she still didn’t fully trust the ex-Division Sniff-sniper.
“I need to know what happened.”
“Who’s shirt?” He started to tug off his gloves.
“Nick’s.”
Ian’s eyebrows shot up and he scowled. “Something happened to Gant?”
She shot him an annoyed look. “Didn’t I just say I need to know what happened?”
“Testy this morning.” He took the shirt from her and bunched it up in his hands. A few seconds later he shoved it back at her. “That was way more of Gant than I ever wanted to see! Is this a prank?”
“What? No!” She glared. “Their hotel looked like Bleeders hit it. I need to know if they’re running or captured.”
“All I see when I touch that.” He gestured to the shirt, “Puts me in flagrante delicto of a very private moment.”
“You’re a sniper, you’ve seen it before. Look past it.” She shoved the t-shirt into his chest and glared. For just a second she flared her pupils and Ian cursed.
“Fine, fine, but something about seeing Cassie like that feels like child porn.” He took a deep breath and took the t-shirt back. He made faces for a long time, Dani tried hard not to tap her foot impatiently. She knew that you couldn’t rush a Sniff. Creepy bastards.
“Seriously? Again?” Ian said, rolling his eyes behind his closed lids.
“Yeah, they’re bad.”
“Oh, yeah, that’s a Division hit squad,” he muttered under his breath. “Looks like they’re waving a piece of paper at them, can’t see what it is from this angle. You’re right about the Bleeders, but Nick goes nova and… looks like they escape. Here, get this thing away from me. I need to wash my hands.”
Dani took the shirt back, shoving it in her bag again while Ian got out some hand sanitizer and pulled his gloves back on. “Can you find them?”
He looked at her and she rolled her eyes.
“Don’t give that ‘bitch, please’ look, alright? Nick goes deep when spooked.”
“Unless he’s got a Shadow on him, I’ll find him.”
“Call me when you do.”
“You owe me, Dani. Again.”
She rolled her eyes and walked away, giving him a little wave. “Put it on my tab, Ian.”

It took Ian a few days, but he did eventually call and Dani found herself outside another cheap hotel door. She was nicer about knocking this time and Nick answered right away.
“Sorry, Division,” he said, then stepped back to let her into the room.
“It’s okay. I got Ian to help.” She nodded at Cassie who smiled back. “But Division probably has your trail again.”
Nick nodded and closed the door behind them. “Yeah, we know.”
“We got sloppy.”
“Really sloppy, what gives?”
Dani was used to Nick and Cassie working like a well-oiled machine. They were pros at hiding from Division. This was a big screw up. They couldn’t afford big screw ups. The two exchanged a look, one of those silent conversations they always had and always made her roll her eyes.
“I’m right here,” she said, exasperated.
“We got married,” Cassie blurted out, then turned bright pink.
That was not what she expected. Dani stared at her and Cassie held up her hand to show off the ring.
“Seriously?”
“You’re from Vegas, shouldn’t you be used to drunken weddings?”
“Not from you two. Those things do count, you know and get registered with the state. That’s what the paper was about.” She shook her head. “A marriage license.”
“We made a mistake,” Nick admitted. “We used our real names. Division computers spotted it and they moved in.”
“And now their Sniffs can track you.”
“Sniffs have been tracking us both for years, Dani. They’ve got something from all of us. Cassie hasn’t seen them moving in. We’re safe.”
“For now.”
“It’s always for now,” Nick pointed out.
Her paranoia grated against Nick’s logic but she was getting better at stomping it down and not panicking right off the bat. She could handle this now. She had learned that much during this whole team work thing.
“Here’s your intel I was supposed to give you before you two tied to knot. Also, Ian saw you two having sex. Congratulations on your big day.” She tossed a flash drive to Nick.
“Aw, Dani, you’re just mad I’m getting more than you,” Cassie said brightly.
“I miss the days when talking about sex would freak you out.”
“I don’t!”
Dani again rolled her eyes and sighed, then she went over to Cassie a hugged her. She was her best friend, after all. Even if it had caused her to panic, she should be happy. It was obvious Cassie was.
“Glad you got your someday, Cassie,” she said, giving an extra squeeze.
“Thanks, Dani.”
She looked over at Nick. “You break her heart, I’ll get Ian to shoot you.”
“Gee thanks, Dani.”
