There is simply nothing like ending a hot day of walking around New Orleans by relaxing in a pool at 10 p.m., floating on your back and looking up at the palm trees as the clouds rush by. Surreal, and so relaxing. After being a right regular 'Napoolean' (Paulie's ingenious term for my persistent Let's Go Swimming! bullying), he finally joined me and and hour was spent pooling around, drinking tropical boozes and finishing off in the jacuzzi). Bliss. Yes.
Last night a mouse - and his buddies - kept me awake until 4 a.m., loudly munching on one of the Hot Nuts he'd thrived from the bag I'd purchased earlier for The Husband. I'd thought the rustling was coming from the ceiling - not uncommon to have ceiling critters in an old building - but the little turdball was under the couch, having a blast eating his pilfered nuts sand fighting with his friends who came to comandeer said nuts. It drove me, literally, nuts. Woke up 7:30, dead tired, and asked management to set some traps. Hopefully it will be the last we hear of Hot Nuts midnight snacking.
We had breakfast at the hotel - fresh baked blueberry muffins - and then set out for the WWII Museum. It was a little disappointing as far as breadth of content goes, but we got to see a Sherman tank (squee!) and some really cute old veterans that I wanted to steal. Being voracious eaters, we then went to the French Quarter for a crawfish boil (seriously yum, and not for the squeamish), po boys and other standard fare, which were all a little average. Came home for a much needed nap, because of that damn mouse, and I'm kinda old. Much later, out to ACME Oyster House, which is a tourist trap but deservedly so - best meal in NOLA so far, charbroiled oysters in garlic, butter and Romano cheese, incredible jambalaya, super good fried shrimp and oyster po boy, and some bourbon bread pudding - Paulie and I split all meals so we could try more things. Staggering out we traveled Bourbon Street with the drunks and tourists and revellers, grabbed a large to go beverage for the pool, and headed back home. Full circle. Another fairly casual day, but brilliant - great food, amazing company with a lovely/funny/generous/sweet boy, and now fully relaxed and content in our (hopefully) mouse-free room. Tomorrow at noon, Mars arrives for her birthday weekend, and the both of us could not be more excited. Did I mention that I'm in love with New Orleans?
