CHAPTER NINE

I brought over an extra juice box and some cookies over to my desk and took my seat, “So Jonghyun hyung is meeting his ex boyfriend for lunch today?”

“Yeah,” Onew says to me as he takes the juice box I had set in front of him. He pushes the straw through the foil and sipped on the juice.

“And are you worried?”

“Should I be?”

“I’m asking you. I mean this is the ex boyfriend who he wanted to live with right?”

“Yeah.”

“And why are they going to lunch?”

“I don’t know, he didn’t tell me. I trust him though. He loves me and I love him.”

“We also loved each other and look at us now,” I gesture between us and laugh a little.

“Yeah, who knew that you’d end up practically married with a kid when you were dating me not too long ago.”

“Do you think Minho and I are moving too fast?”

“Do you think you’re moving too fast?” Onew questions me with a raised eyebrow.

“No, surprisingly I don’t. It feels right to be in this place with him. I love him and Yoogeun very much,” I look over at the small boy who is sitting at a table not too far from us. He was talking and laughing with the three other people at his table. I couldn’t help but smile, Yoogeun was coming out of his shell more and more these days. To think this kid was the outcast of the class a few months ago, but is now friends with the twins who rarely played with anyone except each other and the new boy who was just as shy as Yoogeun when he first came to my class.

“I can see it.”

I turn to back to Onew when I hear what he says, “See what?”

“How much you love him and his son,” he smiles at me and grabs my hand, giving it a gentle squeeze.

“And you have nothing to worry about,” I squeeze his hand back, “I’m sure they just went to lunch to catch up with one another.”

“I know, but I’m still a little nervous. I mean this kind of came out of nowhere you know.”

“Yeah, but like you said, Jonghyun hyung loves you. He’s loved you since we were in college. So you have nothing to worry about. Besides, isn’t his ex dating Minho’s neighbor now?”

“I don’t know. I don’t keep tabs on my boyfriend’s ex boyfriends. I’d rather focus all of my energy on my boyfriend.”

“I’m just saying. Jonghyun used to date Taemin right?”

“Yeah.”

“And Taemin is now dating Youngwon, Minho’s neighbor and regular baby sitter.”

“Isn’t he your neighbor now too? You live with Minho remember?”

I let out a laugh, “That’s right, I do. I forget sometimes.”

“Oppa,” we both look over to see Jess walking up to us with a cookie in hand. It was adorable that she had developed a crush on Onew.

“Yes princess?” Onew says as he pulls her into his lap. I reached over and brushed the hair that had slipped out of her ponytail behind her ear. She smiled a thank you to me before turning back to Onew.

“I bringed you my last cookie,” she held up the cookie in her hand towards Onew’s mouth expecting him to eat it.

“Did you now?”

“Ne.”

“Wae?”

“Acause I want you to has it.”

“Well you are a very sweet princess, but I still have some of my own,” he points to the cookies we still had between us and Jess pouts.

“Oh I see.”

Onew smiled at her and tickled her stomach to get rid of the frown on her face. She giggled and curled in on herself. I watched them with a soft smile on my own face, “You’re going to make a great dad one day Onew.”

He just smiled at me before talking to the little girl in his lap, “Your cookie looks so much better than mine though.”

“It is. It will be the most deliciousness cookie you ever had!”

“Well how can I turn that down?” Onew opened his mouth wide and Jess popped the cookie into his mouth. Of course he had to pretend to bite her as she did so and she giggled again.

“Oppa, that was my hand not the cookie.”

“Oh, mianhe princess,” Onew tapped the top of her nose, “Thank you for the cookie. You were right, it was the most delicious cookie I’ve ever had.”

“You’re welcome,” she gave Onew a hug before he set her back down on the ground.

“Now go back to play with your friends,” he told her and she smiled before returning to her table. She waved at us when she got there and we waved back.

“She’s adorable,” he says turning back to me and grabbing his juice box again.

“She’s a little monster.”

“What do you mean?”

“She’s not as sweet as she looks. If anything she’s the more devious of the two of them,” I point to the twins who now seemed to be arguing about something, both of the gesturing around to prove their point.

“I can see that,” he says after turning back to face me, “She kind of reminds me of you.”

“Yah,” I playfully hit his arm and we both laugh, “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Well you can be really sweet when you want to be, but you have a feisty side to you.”

“Minho tells me that all the time,” I lean back in my chair and smile at the thought of my boyfriend.

“Smart man, I approve of him.”

“And if you didn’t?”

“I wouldn’t let you date him.”

“Who says that you can dictate who I can date?”

“I’m your ex boyfriend. Any of your new boyfriends need to get approval from me or you can’t date them.”

“Well I don’t think you’ll have to worry about approving any one but Minho.”

“Oh?” he raised his eyebrow at me and handed me a cookie for eating one fro himself.

“Uh huh,” I say and eat my cookie, turning my attention to the kids in my class. They were all pretty much done with their snacks and were going back to playing whatever game or toy they were playing with before snack time.

*~*

I was already on my way back home since all I had to do was turn in my proposal at work. I didn’t have any other projects to work on since the one I was currently assigned to was the biggest I’ve ever gotten. Normally I took on 2-3 projects at a time, but I wanted to focus all my attention on this one so I wouldn’t screw it up.

I decided to stop by the school on the way to see if Kibum needed me to get anything at the store. I needed to go and pick up a few things for the special surprise I had been planning for him anyways. I made a stop at a flower shop that wasn’t too far from the school and bought a bouquet of his favorite flowers.

I was just about to enter his classroom, a big smile on my face as I pictured how he would react when he saw me with the flowers. I stopped right outside of the door and my eyes immediately went to the two adults in the room, one with a little girl on his lap.

I knew right away that the two adults were Kibum and his ex boyfriend Onew. The little girl on Onew’s lap was Jess, one of Yoogeun’s friends. I watched them from the other side of the door. Kibum brushed the hair out of Jess’ face and tucked it behind her ear. The three of them smiled and laughed as they talked. They looked like a perfect little happy family. My heart drops at the sight.

I turn and start to walk back to the entrance of the building. I completely forgot about the flowers that I had, my hands clenched around the bouquet causing my knuckles to turn white. I’ve never seen Kibum look so carefree and happy. And it hurt to know that he was like that with his ex instead of with me. Maybe I fell too hard, too fast for him.

“Hey, sorry I’m late,” I say as I take the seat across from Jonghyun.

“No problem. I just got here a few minutes ago anyways,” he replied as he waved off my apology. I really would have been on time had it not been for Youngwon deciding to join me in the shower. Needless to say, we did more than wash our bodies while we were in there and I had completely lost track of time. I was going to make sure to punish him later tonight for causing me to be late.

“So how have you been? I feel like we haven’t talked in forever. Sorry about that. I didn’t really try to keep in touch with you after our break up.”

“It’s okay. I mean I was the one to initiate it, so it’s only normal that you needed some time to get over it before we talked again. I’ve been good though. Onew and I are living together now.”

“Are you?”

“Yeah, it’s different. I’m not used to having a roommate, but it’s nice at the same time. I get to hold him when I go to sleep every night and he’s right there beside me when I wake up in the morning. It’s what I’ve always wanted since I realized I was in love with him back in college.”

“That’s nice to hear hyung.”

“I’m sorry, you probably don’t want to hear me talking about my boyfriend.”

“It’s okay. I’m happy for you so don’t worry about it. I’ve moved on myself you know.”

“Oh yeah, you told me that you’re dating the guy you tutor in math right?”

“Yeah.”

“How did that happen?”

“I don’t know, but I’m glad it did. I’m really happy with Youngwon. He’s a big dork sometimes, but it’s cute.”

“Are you still tutoring him?”

“It’s more like he’s tutoring me.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, apparently he was faking being bad at math so I would help him out.”

“That’s kind of sweet.”

“And stupid.”

“Well yeah, that too, but still a little on the sweet side.”

“Anyways, so why did you want to have lunch?”

“Just to catch up with you and see how you were doing. But I can see that you’re doing just fine.”

“Why did you expect? For me to be completely depressed about our break up?”

“Well…” he looked down at the menu in his hands.

“Aw, Jjongie,” I reach over the table and caress his face, “You’re so cute. We dated for awhile, but I don’t think we loved each other.”

“You didn’t fall in love with me?”

“And you did?”

“Well no, I love Onew.”

“Exactly. I mean I liked you a lot and the potential for it to have become love was there, but then we broke up.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No need to be. I’m with Youngwon now and I do love him. He makes me happy and I know that Onew makes you happy. So there’s no reason for either of us to apologize. We just weren’t meant to be Jonghyun hyung and I’ve accepted that.”

“But you were still hurt when we broke up.”

“Of course I was. Who isn’t upset when they’re dumped?”

“So can I at least apologize for that?”

“No need to, I’ve already forgive you. Now let’s stop talking about such depressing matters and tell me what else you’ve been up to,” I turn my gaze to my own menu, reading over all the dishes that were offered and trying to decide which one he wanted to order.

*~*

“Is this seat taken?” a person asks as they pull out the chair across from me and takes a seat. I’m about to tell them that it is taken and to politely ask them to leave until I see who it is.

“Doojoon hyung,” I smile and set the book I was reading down on the table.

He returns my smile and waves at me before pushing a coffee towards me, “Still drinking the usual?”

“I’m a creature of habit, what do you think?” I grab the cup and take a sip of the warm liquid, “I can’t believe you even remember what my usual is.”

“We dated for almost two years, it’s practically burned into my brain. Bet you still remember my drink of choice,” he lifts his own cup at me and shakes it a little before sipping it.

“It’s still early and kind of chilly out so you would be drinking an earl grey latte. Am I right?”

“As always.”

We sit there in a nice, comfortable silence. It’s been a while since I’ve seen Doojoon and I missed him. He had gotten busy with work and school and we weren’t able to hang out like we normally did. It didn’t help that we went to different schools as well. But I was happy to see him sitting across from me again. He is still one of my closest friends to this day. I smiled at the ironic thought that Taemin was on a lunch date with Jonghyun and here I am sitting across my own. The only difference is that mine wasn’t planned.

“So how have you been?” Doojoon asked me, pushing forward the bagel he had bought to go with his drink.

“Good. Busy with school and baby sitting my neighbor’s son, but good nonetheless. And yourself?”

“Same. Sorry I haven’t been able to talk to you lately. If it makes you feel any better, I’ve been a horrible son as well. My mom has been calling me so much and I rarely ever answer since I’m either working, in class, or in the library studying. She thought something bad had happened to me for awhile.”

“Oh well that explains why she randomly called me and asked if I had seen you.”

“She called you?”

“Yeah, a couple weeks ago. She seemed a little frantic.”

“That’s my mom for you. I think you’re the only person I’ve dated that she actually likes and still talks to.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, she still asks me to bring you over to dinner one of these days.”

“Well I’d love to see her again. I loved her too. She’s such a sweetheart.”

“She’s crazy.”

“I still don’t see it.”

“That’s because she’s different when you’re around.”

“If you say so,” I sip at my drink and break off a piece of the bagel to nibble on, “So besides school and work, what else have you been up to?”

“Missing you.”

I do my best not to spit out the food that’s in my mouth and look at him. He’s staring directly at me with a smile on his face, “Um… I miss you too?”

He laughs at me and reaches over to pinch my cheek, “Aigo, you’re still so cute. I really have been missing you though.”

“And I’ve been missing you too. You’re like my best friend and you dropped off the face of the earth for a few weeks. I was worried you weren’t taking good care of yourself and I would get news that you were in the hospital because of exhaustion. You really should stop working yourself to your limits. And don’t even try to tell me you’re not, I know you Doojoon hyung.”

“Okay, okay. I get it. Geez, you’re starting to sound like my mom. Now I see why she likes you so much.”

I laugh and hit his foot under the table with my own, “Well someone has to keep an eye on you when she’s not around.”

“And I guess that someone is you.”

“Damn straight.”

Doojoon just smiled at me and lifted his hand to caress my cheek, “Why did I ever let you go?”
