CHAPTER FIVE
“This is so good,” I say as I shove another forkful of food into my mouth, “And that’s really all it takes to cook it?”
“Yup,” Youngwon answers from across the table, “Easy huh?”
“Piece of cake.”
“You going to make if for your boyfriend?”
“I don’t know,” I didn’t really want to talk about Jonghyun right now. For some reason it felt kind of awkward whenever one of us brought him up. I really didn’t want to think about my boyfriend when I was around Youngwon for some reason. Don’t get me wrong, I still love Jonghyun, but I would rather focus on getting to know the blue-haired boy in front of me instead. I noticed that I’ve been tutoring him for about three months now and I barely knew anything about him.
“So I have a question,” I place my fork and knife down. I grab my napkin and dab at my mouth before taking a drink of my water.
“Shoot,” he says to me, still shoveling food into his mouth. I never would have thought that he ate this much from how small he was. Well he was bigger than me, but not by much.
“I’ve been wondering this ever since I saw you for the first time.”
“Let me guess,” he takes a drink of water and then stares at me from across the table. His eyes are kind of intense so I’m force to look away, “You’re wondering why I have blue hair huh?”
“How’d you know?”
“That’s what most people bring up when they first meet me these days. I don’t mind it. Sometimes I wonder myself. It all kind of just happened. I wanted a new hairstyle and this is what my stylist gave me. I wasn’t too crazy about it at first, but it quickly grew on me. I actually really like it now. I don’t know if I’ll ever go back to my natural color. Well I’m sure I will because I will eventually get tired of this color, but for now I still love it.”
“Well I like it too. Not very many people can pull off such bright colored hair.”
“Thanks. So when did you start dancing?”
“Oh that,” I start to blush since I don’t really talk much about my dancing. I used to be made fun of back in my middle and high school days. My classmates weren’t really used to seeing a guy so passionate about dance and the fact that I was gay on top of that didn’t help matters. Not that I went around advertising my sexual orientation, “Well I started dancing when I was in elementary school, but I got really into it during middle school.”
“That’s cool. I didn’t start to really get into dancing until my high school days. My friends king of forced me to join our school’s dance team.”
“Ah, I see. I actually never would have thought you were into it,” I pick up my fork and continue to eat the chicken in front of me.
“Same goes for you,” it’s silent in the small apartment again. I wasn’t sure what to say or do besides eat my food. I hate awkward silences. Then again I don’t know if I would call this an awkward silence because I feel like he wants to say something, but is too afraid to say it.
“So,” he starts to say, playing around with the food on his plate.
“Buttons,” I respond out of habit.
“What?”
“Sew buttons. My grandma used to say it whenever anyone would say ‘so’ but nothing afterwards. Sorry, it’s just a habit. I say it whenever I hear the word.”
“Oh, that’s cute,” he says to me with a shy smile and I feel myself blushing again. I have no idea why I’m blushing in the first place. It’s just Youngwon, a guy that I barely even know. We barely even talk outside of class except for our tutoring sessions. I don’t go out of my way to talk to him even when we pass by one another in the hallways.
“You know,” I start.
“Yeah?” he downs the rest of his water and stands up, “You want more water?”
“No, I’m okay.”
“Alright, hold that thought. I’ll be right back,” he disappears back into the kitchen and I think about what I was going to say to him. I feel like I should apologize for kind of ignoring him at school. That I don’t mean to do it, but I’m not exactly sure how I should word it so that he doesn’t take it the wrong way. I don’t have much time to think because he’s sitting across from me again in no time, “So what were you saying?”
“I just wanted to apologize.”
“Apologize for what?”
“For pretty much ignoring your whenever I see you outside of class and our tutoring sessions. I really don’t mean to do it, it kind of just happens,” I say, bowing my head down.
“It’s okay, it’s not like I go out of my way to talk to you outside of class and tutoring sessions. So we’re both at fault and I apologize as well. What caused you to bring it up all of a sudden anyways?”
“I don’t know, it just kind of popped up in my head.”
“Oh okay,” we’re both done with our food by now and just sitting there, staring at one another, “You done?”
“Yeah,” he gets up and starts to pile the dishes from the table, “Here let me help you with that,” I take the dishes from his hands and walk into the kitchen.
“You really don’t have to,” he says as he joins me next to the sink.”
“It’s the least I can do since you cooked dinner,” I turn on the water and start to rinse off the plates, cups, and eating utensils.
“We,” he emphasizes the word, “cooked dinner. You did help.”
“You did most of it.”
“You still helped. So there’s no need for you to wash the dishes. Besides, you’re the guest here and it makes me look bad if I make you do chores while you’re here.”
“Yes, but it’s because I’m a guest that I should help out. I mean what else can I do to show my appreciation that you let me into your home a couple times a week?”
“You’re my tutor, you kind of have to come here.”
“No I don’t. We can always have our sessions at the library or something.”
“Are you saying that you want to start tutoring me at the library from now on?”
“No, that’s not it at all. I like coming here, the atmosphere is a lot more relaxing. Plus we don’t have to worry about our noise level. Okay, so how about we compromise?”
“What do you have in mind?”
“I wash and you rinse? Simple enough right?”
“Works for me.”
He moves to my other side and we quickly fall into a conversation about the other classes we were taking, the last movie we saw, music we like to listen and dance to. We pretty much talked about anything and everything. I don’t know why it was so easy for us to talk while we were doing the dishes compared to when we were eating dinner. Maybe it was because we weren’t directly across from one another and forced to kind of stare at the other. We were standing next to each other and our attention was partially on washing the dishes. I don’t know, but whatever the reason I’m glad. Youngwon was actually a really great guy to be around and he was funny as well. I don’t know why we weren’t friends before any of this.
“Oh man, look at the time,” he says as he hands me a paper towel to dry my hands off on.
“Is it really that late already?” I ask as my eyes follow his to the clock that’s on the stove.
“Apparently.”
“I better get going home, my family are probably worried. Then again, my phone hasn’t gone off in the past hour,” I take quick steps to my belongings which I had placed in the living room before we started to eat dinner. I pull my phone out of my backpack and check to see if my family tried to get ahold of me. Surprisingly none of them did, that’s odd. I did get a text from Jonghyun telling me that he was going to be hanging out with Onew tonight and to call/text if I needed anything.
“You know, it’s already midnight and I’m not sure if I’m comfortable with you going home by yourself this late. From what you’ve told me, you don’t live very close to here.”
“Oh I’ll be fine. This wouldn’t be my first time going home this late.”
“But still, I’d never forgive myself if something bad happened to you. That and your boyfriend would probably kill me and I’d prefer not to get murdered by a person I don’t even know.”
“What are you getting at?” I raise an inquisitive eyebrow at him. I could tell that he was getting nervous by the way he was playing around with his hands. It was cute.
“Maybe,” he starts and then stops for a few seconds, “Maybe…”
“Maybe?” I try to hold back my giggle when he starts to stare at anything but me.
“Maybe you should stay the night here,” he says barely above a whisper.
“I don’t know Youngwon,” I reply and he finally looks at me. I can see that he’s a little hurt by what I just said, but I quickly push it aside.
“Come on Taemin. It’ll be way past midnight when you get home and you might come into contact with some shady characters this late at night. It’s not safe. I insist that you stay the night. I’ll lend you some sweats and you can go home first thing in the morning.”
“Youngwon,” I start but he holds up his hand to stop me.
“I’m not going to take no for an answer. Call your family and let then know that you’ll be spending the night at my place. I’m going to go get you some sweats, blankets, and pillows.”
“Oh okay,” he walks out of the room before I can say anymore. I guess I didn’t really need to tell him that I was going to agree before he stopped me. He was right that it was too late for me to be heading home by myself. Plus I was getting kind of tired, I don’t think I would have been able to make it all the way home.
“Here you go,” he says as he enters the room, arms pull of various things. He sets the pillows and blankets on the couch and hands me the sweats, “They may be a little big on you, but it’s better than sleeping in jeans.
“Thanks,” I smile and bow to him before walking to the bathroom. I’m surprised when I see that he’s laying on the couch, all curled up in the blankets when I return, “What are you doing?”
“I wouldn’t be a good host if I made you sleep on this lumpy old thing,” he pats the couch, “So I’m letting you take my room.”
“You don’t have to.”
“I know,” he reaches up and turns off the light, “Good night Taemin.”
*~*
It’s been a few days since I caught Onew and Jonghyun kissing outside of our apartment building. We had a long talk the next day, he had spent the night at Jonghyun’s that night. I didn’t get a wink of sleep because I was thinking about what might have happened between the two. Anyways, I was upset to say the least, crying my eyes out the whole night and the whole day after. It was hard for us to talk about that night since Onew only remembered bits and pieces, but he didn’t seem to forget the kiss at all. He was definitely sorry for doing it, but I’m not sure if he was sorry that it even happened in the first place. I mean Jonghyun is his best friend and knows him a lot better than I do. I’m sure that Onew knows Jonghyun better than his boyfriend does as well. I guess them having feelings for one another was bound go happen. I just thought that Onew’s love for me was stronger, apparently it wasn’t
“MR. KEY!” I snap out of my thoughts and turn in the direction that the voice was coming from. The Kim twins were running towards me, their parents and I’m guessing their older brother right behind them.
“Hello Dori and Jess,” I crouch down and they almost run right into me when they stop, sliding a little bit from the just cleaned floors and their socks.
“ANNEYEONGHASE YO!” they reply, bowing to me with big smiles on their faces, “This is Dayday appa, Titi umma, and Dari hyung/oppa!”
“SEE!” Jess shouts as the rest of their family joins them in front of me, I look up and smile at them, “Dari oppa has biiiiiiig muscals!”
“You no tell him, I did!” Dori yells at her. They’re both currently grabbing for his arms, probably to show me just how big his muscles are.
“Nah uh!” she replies.
“Dori, Jess stop it,” Inati, their umma, says to them, “Why don’t you go and show Dari your artwork?”
“Ne!” they each grab a hand of the older boy and start to drag him to where I have their artwork laid out. I can faintly hear both of them talking a mile a minute and can tell that their brother is probably rolling his eyes.
“Good evening Mr. Key,” Dayday greets me and I grab his extended hand to shake it, “Dori and Jess have been behaving better right? It’s been awhile since we’ve gotten a phone call or note about their attitude and behavior.”
“Well they haven’t done anything that will get them into trouble recently,” I reply, “It’s probably because they’ve made some new friends.”
“They have?” Inati seems surprised and looks over at his kids, “This is the first time I’ve heard of them ever making any kinds of friends. They’ve been to 3 other pre-schools and the teacher has always told me that they refuse to play with any other kids. It’s nice to hear that they seem to have gotten past that phase.”
“Dari,” Dayday says, “Will you just pick them up? That’s all they want.”
“But I don’t want to. Besides they’re not the lightest kids,” he responds.
“Aish, babe,” Dayday places a hand on Inati’s arm and the other turns to face him. He points to where their children are and receives a nod in respond.
“Excuse us,” Inati says and they both head over to their direction. Dayday picks up Jess and Inati picks up Dori as both seem to be shedding tears for some reason. Good thing their parents were here.
“MR. KEY! MR. KEY! MR. KEY!” a big smile crosses my face when I see Yoogeun walk into the room with his appa. I bend down and he runs right into my body, hugging me tight. I loved getting hugs from this little boy. They were always so warm and genuine. I had just saw him a few hours ago, but he was hugging me like it’s been years since he’s seen me.
“Hello Key,” his appa’s deep voice fills the area around us and I look up at him, Yoogeun never letting go of me.
“Hello Minho,” he smiles at me and I kind of melt inside. His smile was no match for Onew’s but it was still able to make me feel gooey inside. I almost feel bad for thinking this about another man, but then I remember that I am no longer dating Onew. We had came to the agreement that we both needed a break from the relationship. We’ve spent every single day since we started dating together. It was time that we spent a little time apart. We were officially on a break, so it shouldn’t matter if I checked out other guys a little bit.
“How are you?”
“Same as I was when I saw you a few hours ago,” I reply and he blushes from embarrassment. Yoogeun has finally let go of me and is now tugging on my hand.
“Mr. Key can we show appa my peeture?” he asks me.
“Sure, but do I need to come too? I’m sure you can bring him all on your own. You’re a big boy right?”
“Ne! But I wants you to come too!”
“Oh okay,” he beams up at me before grabbing Minho’s hand and tugging us to the table where his picture was laying. I catch a glimpse of Minho from the corner of my eye and see that there’s a faint smile playing at his lips. I wonder why it’s there.
“See appa! I drawed a froggie!”
“I can see that,” Minho is kneeling on the floor beside Yoogeun. He’s pulled the little boy into his lap as he holds the picture in front of both of them, “You did a really good job Yoogeunnie. Appa is very proud of you.”
“Really?”
“Really. Does the frog have a name?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“He not tell me.”
“Oh really? That’s not very nice of him.”
“It’s okay. He not apposed to talk to strangers.”
I love how imaginative Yoogeun is, especially when it comes to coloring and drawing. It seems like he was always at a table with a box of crayons spread out all around him and numerous papers strewn about as well. Their home must be overflowing with his pictures by now because it seems like Minho is the type of parent to hang all of his son’s artwork on the fridge.
And as if to confirm my suspicions, Minho says, “It looks like we’ll either need to buy a bigger fridge or another one altogether. I’m running out of places to hang all your artwork.”
“Appa,” Yoogeun whines, “This not for you silly!”
“What?” I smile at the fake hurt expression Minho is giving his son, “It’s not for me?”
“No.”
“Who is it for then?”
“Mr. Key,” I look at him in surprise. I wasn’t expecting my name to come out of his mouth.
“What?” I kneel down as well and Yoogeun is beaming at me.
“It’s for you!” he holds out the picture to me and I take it from him.
“Are you sure? This is such a pretty picture, it should be for your appa not me.”
“Appa no mind right?” he turns to Minho and gets a nod from him.
“Well then thank you very much Yoogeun,” I say and ruffle his hair.
“Welcome! Appa let’s meet Dori, Jess, and Shindong!” Yoogeun starts to tug his appa towards his friends. I stand back up and walk over to my desk to put the picture in my bag. I spend the rest of the evening talking to parents and answering any of their questions about how their children are doing in class. There really isn’t much to since all the kids in my class were pretty well-behaved, with the exception of Dori and Jess, but I’ve already talked to their parents about it numerous times. Seems like it’s just how the two are naturally, but it seems like they’ve improved a lot since they befriended Yoogeun.
“Dari will you just take your sister?” Dayday says as people start to fill out the classroom.
“I don’t know why I need to carry her. She has two feet, she can walk herself,” is the reply he gets.
“She’s asleep!”
“Why can’t umma carry her?”
“Because she’s carrying your brother who is also asleep.”
“So?”
“Will you just take her so I can go to the bathroom?”
“Why-?”
“I am not carrying your sister while I use the bathroom. I’ll be back in two minutes,” Dayday is finally able to hand over a sleeping Jess to his oldest son as he rushes out of the room.
“You’re going to have one helluva time with those two when they get to be his age,” I say to Inati while they wait for Dayday to return.
“Yeah we are,” he replies, adjusting his hold on Dori, “We’re not looking forward to it, but it normally isn’t this bad when we’re at home.”
“What do you mean?”
“Contrary to how he’s been acting tonight, Dari is a doting older brother. He truly loves his baby brother and sister and spoils them rotten when we’re at home. It’s just when we’re out that he tries to act too cool.”
“Ah I see. He’s a true teenager.”
“I guess that’s the simple way of putting it.”
“Mr. Dori and Jess’ umma!” Yoogeun is in front of us, Minho right behind him.
“Yes Yoogeun?”
“Appa says Dori and Jess can come play at our house if it okay with you. So can they? PWEASE!!!”
“Aigo,” I say and can’t help but pinch the young boy’s cheek, “You’re so cute!”
“Appa says that too! I not cute! I’m a man!” Inati, Minho, and I get a nice little laugh out of what he just said. Barely even four and he’s already tired of being called cute, which ironically makes him even cuter.
“Well Yoogeun, I think it would be great if Dori and Jess come over to play sometime. Just not tonight okay?”
“Okay. Why they sleeping?”
“They missed their afternoon nap so we can come here.”
“Oh. I no nap anymore acause I’m a big boy! Right appa?”
“Right son.”
“Alright baby, let’s go. We still need to eat dinner and I don’t want the kids to be up all night. We really should be letting them sleep right now as it is,” Dayday says once he returns, attempting to take Jess away from Dari.
“It’s okay appa, I got her.”
“Now you want to hold her. Teenagers. Come on baby, let’s go.”
“Okay. I’ll give you a call Minho and we can set up a playdate for the kids.”
“Sounds good to me.”
We all exchange our goodbyes and I guess we were a little loud because the twins wake up and the last thing we hear as they leave the room is whining from them. And now the only people left are me, Yoogeun, and Minho.
“Appa,” I turn and see Yoogeun whispering in Minho’s ear, a slow smile spreading across his face as he listens to his son.
“I think that would be very nice of us,” he and I see that Yoogeun has a smile that pretty much mirrors the one on Minho’s face. I’m a little scared to find out what they’re talking about.
*~*
“What are you two doing?” Key asks us as both me and Yoogeun start to walk around the room, picking up trash off the ground and straightening the furniture.
“Appa and I are helping!” Yoogeun replies, throwing his armful of trash in the garbage can.
“Oh you don’t have to, really,” he walks over to Yoogeun and tries to stop him from cleaning up, but he fails horribly. Like I’ve said before, my son was big on helping. I guess it made him feel more like a big boy whenever he helped out. And that was his thing these days. He was a big boy and made sure to constantly tell me and Youngwon that.
“It’s okay. We want to.”
“Yeah, we want to Key. You spent all this time getting tonight ready, you deserve to rest a little bit. So just sit down and relax. We’ll clean up for you,” I tell him and give him a quick wink. I start to arrange the desks so they were more spread out in the room instead of all together in the middle of the room. Yoogeun on the other hand was now putting the toys back in their correct places.
“No, really. It’s okay. You two must be tired, just go on home,” again Key tries to help Yoogeun with the task at hand, but fails once more. I smile, it seems like I’ve been doing that a lot tonight, and move to help him instead. My help he greatly accepts.
“You sit down and relax,” I tell the young teacher again, “Yoogeun and I will clean up.”
“Yeah!” Yoogeun grabs his teacher’s hand and leads him to one of the small chairs I had just pushed into a table. He forces his teacher to sit and pats his head before running back to me, “You stay there!”
Key laughs and I have to admit that I love the sound of it, “I guess this is one argument I won’t be winning.”
“No,” I’m brought out of my trance when Yoogeun hits my head, “Appa that no go there!”
“What?”
“You put Keroro in wrong place! Aish! Go sit by Mr. Key! Yoogeun will clean!”
“What?” and before I know it, he’s pushing my butt in attempts to get me to move towards his teacher, “Yoogeun, appa said he was going to help you clean.”
“Appa in the way! Go sit!” he keeps pushing me, but I don’t budge and inch. Key is laughing again and I’m immediately drawn into the sound. His laugh and smile is so contagious that I find myself joining in with him, “APPA!!!!”
“Okay, okay,” I start to walk, but he’s still pushing me in hopes of making me walk faster.
“Appa sit!” he says after pulling out the chair next to Key and I do as I’m told, “Good appa!”
“Am I a dog now?” I ask him.
“Ne! Appa puppy!” he pets my head before running back to what he was doing. I turn to Key who is trying his best to keep his giggles in.
“You can laugh if you want to, I don’t mind,” and he does. Once again I find myself joining in with him. Neither one of us notice the smirk that’s on my son’s face as he watches us from across the room.
“He’s a bossy little boy isn’t he?” Key finally says once his laughter dies down.
“You should see him when we’re at home. It’s worst. He thinks he’s 40 instead of 4. He’s always trying to help me with everything. Cleaning, cooking, bills, you name it, he wants to help.”
“He’s the same way here. He’s my little helper.”
“That’s what he tells me all the time.”
“Really?” Key turns to me and we stare at one another until it gets a little awkward. He ends up turning away first.
“Yeah. He really likes you,” I see a soft blush cross over his high cheekbones and he looks even more cute than he normally does. Gosh, has it really been that long since I’ve liked someone. I’m acting like a lovesick, hormonal teenage boy now.
“Well I like him too,” he leans into me and lowers his voice, “Don’t tell the other parents, but Yoogeun is my favorite.”
I let out a loud laugh which startles Yoogeun and he jumps a little, “I promise I won’t tell them.”
“Appa, Mr. Key,” Yoogeun runs back up to us, “All done!”
“Wow, the room looks great Yoogeunnie,” I say as I look around the room. He did a pretty good job at cleaning up on his own. I guess his cleanliness came from his mom, my sister was always cleaning when we grew up. I remember that I used to pay her to clean my room, not that I was taking advantage of her, she actually liked to clean. And it looks like her son was taking after her in that regard.
“Yeah, it looks amazing, better than when I do it myself,” Key adds.
“Thankies!” Yoogeun climbs into my lap, facing Key, “Appa.”
“Yes?”
“Can Mr. Key eat with us?” I can’t help but smile again. I guess my son was able to read my mind afterall. I didn’t really want to part ways with his teacher just yet.
“I don’t know, why don’t you ask him?”
“Mr. Key?”
Key turns to look at him like he didn’t know what he was about to ask, “Yes Yoogeun?” I watch as his hand comes up and starts to fix my son’s hair. I’m surprised that he isn’t complaining like he normally does when I try to do it.
“Wanna eat with appa and me? Appa is a really good cook!”
“Hm, I don’t know,” his hand is still tangled in Yoogeun’s hair and Yoogeun doesn’t seem to mind one bit. I’m a little offended because if it were me, he would be scolding me by now about how I was messing his hair up more than fixing it.
“PWEASE!”
“Now, Yoogeun maybe Mr. Key has to get home to his own family hm?” I say to him.
“Nah uh! He eat with us! PWEASE!” and that’s when the big guns come out. Yoogeun scrunches his face up, lips pouting, bottom lip quivering, eyes hanging low, tears welling up behind them. Gosh he was good at this, a little too good if you ask me.
“Okay, okay. I’ll come and have dinner with you two.”
“It’s okay Key, if you have to get home to your own family, we completely understand. Right Yoogeun?” his arms are crossed over his chest and a genuine pout is on his face.
“Aigo, you’re so cute Yoogeunnie,” Key pinches his cheek and again I’m surprised that he doesn’t complain, “But it’s okay Minho. I don’t have to go home to my family. I actually don’t have a family of my own. It’s just me. So I don’t mind eating dinner with you two. It’ll be nice.”
“You sure? I just don’t want you to be agreeing out of guilt because of this little guy here,” I tickle Yoogeun’s stomach in hopes of getting a smile out of him. He tries to hold in his laughter, but fails almost immediately. A round of giggles fill the room as I continue to tickle him. I look up in the middle of it and see that Key is staring at us with a warm gaze, my cheeks start to heat up again.
“I’m positive.”
“Well then we better get going, I’m starving,” Yoogeun gets off my lap and I stand up, followed by Key.
“Yoogeunnie is hungee too!!!” he exclaims, grabbing my hand before grabbing Key’s as well. Key and I exchange glances after he does this. I’m beginning to wonder if my son is trying to set me up with his teacher. The sneaky little bugger.
*~*
Appa likes Mr. Key, I know he does. I never see appa smile like when he looks at Mr. Key. Appa is in looooove. Mr. Key has to like appa. Who wouldn’t like appa? He’s smart, handsome, strong, funny, and makes nummy food.
“So what do you feel like eating tonight Yoogeunnie?” appa asks me as we leave school.
“HAMBURGER!!!!” I say happily as I swing their hands and skip along. It’s hard to keep up with them, they take giant steps. I have small legs, but appa says I’ll grow as big as him soon. If I eat my veggies, but I no like veggies. They’re icky and make my farts smell stinky. Well more stinky than they’re apposed to be.
“Do you mind getting burgers with me and Yoogeun?” I hear appa ask Mr. Key.
“Not at all.”
I see them smiling at each other and staring. I feel like I’m not here. But that’s okay, I just want my burger.
“Well then burgers it is,” appa is smiling again. He never smiles this much. Mr. Key is totally going to be my umma!
