A Time of Comfort

I tell myself that I will remain calm. I’ve done a good job so far. Even when Joel helped me out of the elevator, I was steady. Even though I’m a mass of emotions on the inside. I want, no need, to see Jim in person. Just talking to him on the cell phone wasn’t enough. I want to see him in person. I turn the corner and he’s standing there, waiting for me.

I just want to hug him. I know it’s the wrong time, the wrong place, but I don’t care. I walk over to him and somehow, I control my urge. We walk side by side, Jim joking with me to get the figurine reappraised and to take the stairs. Actually, I finish the line for Jim. I can’t help but smile as we leave Wilkenson Towers.

“You should let me take you home, Chief.”

“What about the report, Jim?” I look over at him.

“The report can wait, Sandburg.”

I follow him to his truck. We are out of sight range of most everyone. I close the distance between us and hug him. To my surprise, he doesn’t back away or try to get out of the embrace. In fact, his arms go around my back and he pulls me closer. We stand there for several minutes, neither one of us ready to release the other just yet. No words are spoken. No words are necessary.

After a few minutes, we separate, but Jim doesn’t completely let me go just yet.

“Let’s go home, Chief.”

“Sounds like a plan, Jim.”
