I disappeared for almost two weeks on a road trip to California. For anybody who's interested, let's go to Jermaine for the blow by blow:
Day One: St. Louis - Kansas City, MO
Left Saturday afternoon (8/5) with the one and only Aaron E. in tow. We stopped in Kansas City to catch a Royals game. I feel for the poor fans, but an upside to having such a crap team is that you can get seats for 20 bucks that would easily cost 50 or 60 at Busch. The Royals lost to the Twinkies in a strange game (Minnesota won something like 14-3, even though both teams had the same number of hits...the Royals are not a bad team, but the pitching is downright atrocious). After the game we stopped in on Anna Young, who I hadn't seen in way too long. I met her roommates and we stayed up till like 4 am shooting the shit. Definitely a lot of fun, and with Miranda moving there I would definitely be interested in returning to KC sometime in the near future.
Day Two: Kansas City - Denver, CO
We departed slightly before noon to get to Denver, which required driving through boring ass Kansas for like 847 hours. We decided that Kansas should change its state motto to "Welcome to Kansas...sorry we're in the way." Uneventful, save for that the day ended at the doorstep of my very favorite Russian not named Kasparitis. We passed out fairly early, but not before I got to see the Chanceinator, who somehow recognized me despite not seeing me in almost four years, and despite his being a dog.
Day Three: Denver - Crested Butte, CO
Woke up that morning to meet Anna's better half, Jamie. I know you're all dying for the word on her, so here it is: I love this girl. Anybody who curses like a sailor and knows all the words to the Dookie album is okay in my book. We drove for a few hours to the quiet, pissant mountain town of Crested Butte and camped for the first night. Had a few beers and I absolutely dominated Anna, Aaron and Jamie at Hearts. It wasn't exactly fair, as I imagine I play 10,000 times more often than them, but they knew they were stepping into the lion's den...Anna and Jamie nodded off early, so Aaron and I ended up hotboxing it and getting the Led out.
Day 4-5: Crested Butte
Stayed put for awhile to camp, hike and the like. Crested Butte is the cutest little town. They attract tourists, but no national supermarket or fast food chains. Basically they keep to themselves and the townspeople seem to be made up of the nice, hippie-folk. I don't remember the precise order of things, but while in Crested Butte we hiked ourselves to death up some mountains, I schooled Anna at frisbee (I can't even say that with a straight face), and we went to Jamie's old bioresearch site just outside of town. That place was really awesome, as they not only delve themselves into plant and animal research, it's also all environmentally sustainable, running on solar power. I'm really into living off the land, and I never really believed places like those could exist until I saw it myself. I want to move there.
Day 6: Crested Butte - Arches National Park, Utah
The morning began with another hike up a mountain, but not before I managed to back my car into a ginormous dirt/clay curb, clogging my tailpipe to hell. Luckily some passersby lent us a huge-ass screwdriver, and Anna cleared the tailpipe, but in the process I managed to knock the exhaust out of alignment and so the rest of the trip my poor Sasha made terrible noises. But the car pressed on like a trooper, and we drove like hell to make it to Arches by sunset. Took in a few of the sights (Mt. Pimpsmack, Sheep Rock, Mt. Elephantitis) before we camped for the night in the most beautiful place ever. We were completely by ourselves, surrounded by the most breathtaking rock structures in the distance all around us. There are no words to do the scene justice, but there should be pictures coming soon.
That's all for now. I'll be back with the second half of the trip when I'm feeling less lazy.
