A somewhat topical post.

Haven't written much because there hasn't been much to say. This past weekend wasn't too terribly bad -- did some reading, and went out with some non-art history friends for sushi Sunday night (Tyson and Leigh, to be exact, thanks for the introduction, martinhesselius). Amusingly, the whole group consisted of larpers, and half the conversation over sashimi was about SWTOR. It was a solid group of people who game for fun, and not as a lifestyle. It was refreshing.

After dinner we repaired to a little shitty dive bar to play pool, drink longnecks of High Life, and take over the juke box singing Fat Bottom Girls at the top of our communal lungs. It was a good group, and most importantly, there wasn't an art historian in the bunch. I've been a little too insular since I've moved here, a combination of the general nature of graduate school and relocating to a new city. Well, I've been here two and a half years, it's not so new anymore.

There was one moment Sunday night that was kind of arresting. The Grammys were on the television beside the bar, but they were pretty much being ignored in the midst of everyone in the place -- including the guys in Motorhead shirts -- grooving to Prince on the juke box, until Adele stepped on stage. For some reason, nothing short of miraculous, the juke box stopped and the sound came back on the television. She started singing "Rolling in the Deep" and the whole bar -- seriously -- was transfixed. I've never seen anything quite like it.

Note: a woman with a mic, some backup singers, and a band. AND NOT A SINGLE FUCKING DANCER.

And that, kids, is the only time I'll reference the Grammys in this journal.
