There's been lots of crap going on. First I hear from Jon that they have submitted a proposal to Gail to extend my internship for six months. Apparently he, Paul, and Melody had all gotten together to discuss it, but I just found out about it this week. Jon had told me that I could extended for at least a month with his grant money, but they're trying for six months. So that would extend me to October. At this point, unless I can get a full time job somewhere within the next two months, this seems like the best option. Also, I talked to Paul about it yesterday and he mentioned that the only thing holding back a definite yes or no was whether or not they would have the funding for it. But apparently today Denise put in a request for that. If I get extended, they are also going to raise my housing allowance, which would be nice. But I told Paul I need to know something for sure by next week at the latest so that we can figure out what to do as far as renewing our lease or possibly looking for something cheaper, since renewing it for 6 months would actually be more expensive than what we are paying now.
There is also the possibility that a new position will be created, a GS6 or 7, which would be a GIS person. I think it's funny...today when I was talking to Denise about SCA's, she said that it costs them $30K to do a one year internship. I'm certainly not getting that money, but it seems like it would be a better idea to just hire a GS5 to do the same work. You wouldn't even have to pay them as much as that. Anyway, so that's been requested by Paul as well and from what I understand they don't really want to see me go. And then there is Wendy's position, which I could apply for, but I probably wouldn't qualify for. I don't know, I guess I'll see when it's finally announced. But if this new position goes through, I should be able to just slip right into it (if I get through the application process anyway) once my six months are up. And living in Panama City for a while wouldn't be bad. It's not my dream job, but it would be a job, and a federal one at that. I am going to continue to look though. And if I come across something that pays better and is more interesting, I believe I'll have to go for that. And at least by that time Gordon County will hopefully have made up their minds about a new GIS position there, so I can finally know if that's going anywhere. And I can continue to work part time for them from home, which will bring in some extra income.
Anyway, other than that I have been swamped with things to do at work. Everyone wants me to do something. So I've had to give some things higher priority. Paul just gave me a new project yesterday that I need to have finished within a couple of weeks. And I've been working primarily on the amphibian data entry for Jon since that needs to be done asap. Next week and probably the week after I'll be going out in the field with Vivian to do a pollination study (I think, anyway), so that' should be fun. It will also give me a chance to put in some extra hours and boost up my time off since I took so much time off last week.
