One Thing 17/7/14 & Northanger Abbey 1986

My One Thing To Do yesterday was to rest, which was much needed. The combination of heat, hayfever, asthma & M.E./CFS is still getting on top of me but I feel a bit better this afternoon.

My One Thing To Do Today was to finish my comic strip skirt, which I did. Hurrah! I'll do a separate post on the skirt.

While I was resting today I also watched the 1986 BBC version of Northanger Abbey, as I'd picked it up in a charity shop a while back. I do enjoy watching Austen adaptations and have seen all the more recent ones many times.

The 1986 version is gloriously over the top (with surprisingly high production values and some lovely shots of Bodiam Castle). In some ways I think it suits the ridiculousness of the story of Northanger Abbey, which doesn't suit a more serious adaptation style as Catherine is so caught up in her naivety and flights of fancy.

There is an amusing scene of the characters partaking of the Roman Baths in Bath while dressed in gowns and massive hats (and in Mr Thorpe's case, what looks like a cowboy hat):

You can see the whole scene from 2.40min on youtube (in fact you can watch the whole thing on youtube).

The music is also very 80s with synths appearing all over the place - not very regency but atmospheric! I also think that in the last scene Mr Tilney has stolen Herne's smoke machine from Robin of Sherwood.

Also decided to join in with #throwbackthursday today, with a picture of me modelling my appalling fashion taste #the80s and my hand-reared pet duck - Daffy. This probably also dates from 1986 - when I would not have been watching  Northanger Abbey on TV.

Ummm, also getting the strange urge to write a SF version of Northanger Abbey...
