Time for some self-promotion and an update on mine and Jay's latest projects:
Asteroid Belter: The Newcastle Science Comic Earlier in the year I wrote a strip for Asteroid Belter, a comic aimed at getting kids interested in science, and ten thousand copies of it were given out at the British Festival of Science. I wrote A Guinea Pig's Guide to Cancer Drug Clinical Trials, which tries to explain why cancer drugs can't be tested on healthy people the way many other drugs can be. It was based on science provided by researchers and clinicians Professor Ruth Plummer and Dr Deborah Stocken, and illustrated by
Sarah AlHazmi.
In their
review of Asteroid Belter, the Forbidden Planet Blog very kindly called our strip "powerful storytelling".
You can now read the whole of Asteroid Belter online at the link above, or if you're going to Thought Bubble you can pick up a free copy from their stall in New Dock Hall.
Preview images from strips in Asteroid Belter - as you can see there are lots of talented people involved, covering lots of subjects! The guinea pig with the poison bottle is from mine & Sarah's strip.
To End All Wars I also recently finished writing a fifteen page story "Go home and sit still" for the WW1 anthology "To End All Wars", edited by Jonathan Clode and Brick and which will be published by Soaring Penguin Press next year. All the stories in the book are inspired by true events, and mine focuses on Dr Elsie Inglis and the unit of the Scottish Women's Hospitals which went out to Russia to support Serbian troops.
Zombre Meanwhile, Jay has been busy adapting the prose story he wrote for Alt Zombie into a comic strip for the Zombre anthology. Jay's strip "Imaginary Kingdom" has been illustrated by acclaimed Polish artist Krzysztof Ostrowski. Zombre has been released this week and will be launched at the Thought Bubble convention in Leeds this coming weekend.
