How I Loved a Stranger
Chapter 3

Later that day, they were going through drills and Taemin whispered to Sungmin, “Hey, are you alright? You seem kinda down. You were odd yesterday, too. What’s up?”
Sungmin hardly responded, he felt dull. “Nothing, I’m fine, just tired.”
Taemin looked at him doubtfully “…Okay.” He said, but made a mental note to look after his younger friend.
When the class ended and Sungmin quickly packed his stuff and left the building. It was dark outside, and the air was cool with a light breeze ruffling his hair. He was angry at himself for getting so stressed out so easily about such little things that hardly mattered.
He let the night air clear his mind. He stared at the shadows made by the streetlights and smiled. He felt free at night, like his problems didn’t exist. School didn’t happen for another 10 hours, he had so much time. He didn’t think of sleep, because during sleep he would only dream of the freedom he felt at night. It calmed his nerves and he felt alright again.
Sungmin’s parents didn’t normally expect him back until around ten or eleven, so he wandered towards the college campus, which was near his house anyway. He had a habit of going here and watching the students come and go from wherever they happened to be that night. Sometimes, kids were out getting drunk, but that number significantly lowered during the week. Most were running around campus getting to night classes or heading home from an evening full of study. He sat on his favorite park bench and made himself comfortable. No one paid any notice to him. He was invisible, and it felt good. Like he could see them, but they didn’t know he was there. It made him excited. Sungmin stretched out his arms and relaxed. He had at least another hour there until he had to leave.
He felt his stomach rumble slightly, so he jumped up to run to the gyro place across the street. He paid, got his food and returned to the bench to enjoy his dinner. It felt good after his day, which felt longer than usual.
He closed his eyes, just feeling the night, opening them slightly when he heard people walking by. Sungmin finished his sandwich, and realizing that it was about ten forty-five, he slowly walked up the grassy area towards the buildings and dorms. Once Sungmin had nearly reached the residential area through the dorm houses, he heard a voice.
            “Sungmin? Is that you?”
He turned around, wondering at who was calling his name, it sounded familiar, it sounded like… “Taewoon?” Sungmin asked in surprise.
A smile broke out on Taewoon’s face. “Hey! It is you! What’s up dude? Are you just coming back from the class? It’s kinda late…”
Sungmin blushed. What was he doing? He thought about this guy all day, and now he was showing up after Sungmin thought he was free of him for the night? “Yeah, I just had a gyro and sat on one of the benches back there…” He pointed behind him towards the green.
Taewoon smiled wider. “Oh that’s cool. I’m sorry I missed practice today, I had a gig. That wasn’t very good of me was it? Missing my second day… Didja miss me?” Sungmin knew he was just being a tease, but he blushed anyway.
“N-no. I was fine…” Sungmin didn’t know how to respond. Now he had his chance to talk to this guy, and he was messing up. He was stuck. “S-so, how did your concert g-go? What did you do? Did you dance?”
“No, actually, I rapped. I love rapping, that’s what I’m really good at. I did the concert with my brother, Jiho. He’s in his first year of college.”
Sungmin’s eyebrows raised in surprise. “Oh, that’s cool.” He said honestly.
“Yeah, it’s pretty fun. You should come see me sometime.” Taewoon said, looking into the distance. “Hey, it’s getting late, do you need a ride home? I would let you stay at my place, but you’d probably have to ask your parents first.”
Sungmin checked his phone for the time. It read 10:47. He couldn’t walk fast enough to get home by eleven… “Sure… Uhm, I guess…” Sungmin said.
“Okay, cool!” Taewoon exclaimed. “Come on, my car’s this way.” They walked to the street where his car was parked, and Taewoon took Sungmin’s stuff and put it in the backseat. “Why do you have these sweaters?” He asked.
“Oh. Because I thought I would be cold this morning, but once I got on the bus, I realized I wasn’t, so I just carried those around all day.”
Taewoon shrugged. “Okay.” He climbed in the drivers seat and checked Sungmin, who wasn’t buckled. Taewoon grinned and tapped his hand on Sungmin’s chest. “Hey, I know it’s late, but you have to abide by the law.”
Sungmin blushed. “O-ok.” He said as he moved to buckle himself.
Taewoon started driving, “So, where do you live? Nearby, right?”
Sungmin nodded. “The neighborhood down that road and to the right.”
“Oh, cool. How far in do you live?”
“I dunno. About 5 minutes by car?”
“Okay.” Taewoon paused. “So, you’re in high school, right?”
            “Yup.”
            “What year?”
            “I’m a sophomore.”
“Oh, okay, so you’re what, fifteen?”
“Yeah, but I’ll be sixteen in December. What year are you in college?”
            “I’m a junior. I’m twenty.”
“Oh, you’re older than I thought…” Sungmin said.
            “Ha ha, sorry to disappoint…”
“I’m not disappointed, I’m just a little surprised!” Sungmin defended himself, and they both laughed. Once they were in the neighborhood, Sungmin directed Taewoon towards his house. Taewoon made a mental note not to forget the way. He wished Sungmin was older, but he was glad that he wasn’t too young. They arrived at Sungmin’s house, and he got out and grabbed his backpack from the back. “Thanks for driving me, Taewoon!” He smiled brightly at him.
“No problem, dude. You should stay over at my place sometime. It would be fun.” Taewoon said with a slightly sly smile.
Sungmin of course turned red at the thought. “O-okay… Thanks again!” He said and slammed the car door shut.
Taewoon grinned at the boy and his actions. “So cute…” He said to himself while watching Sungmin struggle with the key in his hands to get the front door open. Once he was inside Taewoon drove off, back to his dorm.
            ~~
When Sungmin closed the door, he immediately rushed up to his room after yelling a quick greeting to his parents in the living room. He closed his bedroom door and sighed as he watched Taewoon drive away through his window. He dropped his things on his desk and flopped on his bed. It felt like a dream. Taewoon was so nice to him. And thought of spending the night at his place? It was just too much.
Sungmin was starting to realize that this obsession was just that. Or maybe it was something a little different. A crush? That’s what it seemed like. Sungmin sat upright in his bed. Was he gay? Maybe, he was obsessing over an attractive older man who seemed to be paying special attention to him. He turned over and lay down in his bed again, gripping his knees. It would be nice to know what was up with him, so Sungmin decided that’s what it was. But he still didn’t really think of himself as “gay”.
Now the only problem was: how did Taewoon see him? It was highly unlikely that he felt the same way that Sungmin did. Sungmin sighed. All of this was so complicated. He smiled, knowing that he would see Taewoon again tomorrow, and that they were on good terms.
