welfare is bone thrown to the poorest to keep the rich from getting their fingers bit. still, moms have to find a place for their babies to sleep and something for them to eat. revolution will come from those who benefit the least from the way things are. it wont be bloody or violent, itll grow from roots in the ground, directly into people's mouths.
my job is making me sad.
work on thursday was bad. i realized that both of my bosses get to define when and when not to have fun. they both come in and talk about non-work-related things, laughing and talking loudly. if either of them walk in and we are talking about non-dv stuff then we are making ourselves look bad in front of the clients.
thats really funfair. what gets to me the most is that both of them think that i should respect them becuase they supervise me. someone being my boss is a terrible reason for me to respect them. i respect them because they know their shit.
the part that bothers me is their assumption of privileges because of the spaces that they occupy. one boss was leading our weekly staff meeting and was talking about why one long-time advocate had not received a certain child protective services training:
boss: "oh well, i didnt even think about it. you were here when i got here, i inherited you."
she then proceeded to repeat the "inherited" thing over and over again. the advocate she was speaking of as an african american woman. me and that advocate talked about it later and we were both very uncomfortable with her using that word. ya know, because of the 200 yr history of slavery.
that is a perfect example of how they are, for the most part, unaware of their privilege.
so what i want to know is, is it like this at every job? do all bosses have very little accountability and lots of room to critique? im working in what is considered a super progressive field. i mean, im surrounded by liberals at any given time. that means that hierarchies and privilege do exist, its just that the people who use them could define them on paper. do i need to work for myself? what the fuck could i do for a living?
another thing that is really getting me is that our major funder is the government welfare agencies. i feel like the welfare agencies are just there to maintain the status quo. they provide a bandiad for the huge gaping wound just so the tissue doesnt completely fall apart. is that was welfare is anyway? a preventative measure against revolution? throw the poorest a bone and they dont bite your hand as much.
i am so frustrated.
