tonight i saw a sneak preview of michael moore's sicko. it was excellent. i've seen almost all of his movies, and this one really seems to show how much he has progressed as a activist filmmaker. if anyone remembers, i wasn't crazy about farenheit 9/11 because i felt it was just so much left-wing propaganda being shoved down the audience's throat, but i thought bowling for columbine was well done.
this movie trumps those by a long shot. it's funny at times, it definitely made me cry, and more than anything it was informative. when you see the state of health care in america compared to canada, england, france and cuba, you really wonder how americans let our system continue in the manner that it does. tony benn, former parliament member of england, said it best - first you frighten, then you demoralize, and if the poor are frightened and demoralized, they're not going to stand up to the government.
i've been reading a lot about community organizing and also howard zinn's book about sncc, and it makes me wonder why we are incapable of that kind of mobilization today. we seem to have lost something, or maybe everyone's too busy with their own shit, i don't know, but something has to give and something has to change.
i want our next president to get us out of iraq and make health care the number one priority and not just talk about it, but actually do something. if all of those other countries can successfully have socialized health care, so can we. it will not ruin this nation - it hasn't ruined any of those. if a country can't take care of its own people, what kind of country is it?
last night/this morning i also had a really, REALLY strange dream. i don't even know how to explain it. all day it has had me really confused.
i also watched half nelson today. it was good - reminded me a little too much of someone i know, but ryan gosling is much better looking. haha.
other than that, i miss my friends.
