Advent Calendar!! The idea of competing with her supposed boyfriend was about as appealing to Marie D'Ancanto as eating a bowl of hot ashes. She wasn't sure if it was the uncertainty of the times or the paranoia that seemed to crept, unbidden, into her character since she first became consciously aware of her 'abilities', but every moment that Bobby Drake further ingratiated himself on Kitty Pryde was another moment in which Marie lost faith in both homo sapiens and homo superior.
She took a moment to look down at her bare hands, bereft of the second skin of leather she cautiously wore whenever in the company of others. She could consider them no more her hands than a prisoner could consider the chains that bound him as his own personal property.
It was these hands that kept her inside whilst, outside her window, Kitty Pryde took hold of Bobby's waist and they spun upon the frozen lake.
She felt tears in her ears as sharp as any icicle and, rather than feeling jealous of the younger girl, she found herself sympathising. She remembered how she had once prayed to take hold of Bobby in such a way and how, as the spark of adolescent passion had struggled and eventually died due to their physical remoteness, the feeling had changed.
She no longer wanted or needed to take hold of anyone, her hands were traitors, she could live with that.
What she couldn't leave with was the knowledge that, as long as she had her powers, Kitty Pryde would be too scared to reach out to her as she reached out for Bobby.
She tightened her hands into fists and turned away. There was no longer any choice for her, only a decision she had yet to make.
With a further look, she snatched up her suitcase and marched determinedly from the room.
