She smoothed the pale hair of her sleeping charge with her bruised hands and tried not to look at the snow that fell outside of the ancient house.
There was something in the passive nature of the girl with the sketchbook that reminded Tifa of someone she didn't want to think about.
If she thought too long then the kindness of the younger girl's movements and words became those of someone else. In her mind's eye, she saw pale blonde hair darken to brown, blue eyes becoming green and then everything became complicated and she didn't know where she was or what she was doing.
She clenched her teeth, her hands trembling as she continued to stroke the soft hair of the sleeping girl.
No matter how long she remained in the old house on the hill above the crooked twilight bathed town, there was little that could take away the memory of the Forgotten Capital, not even the kisses offered from the young girl's unquestioning lips.
Lying on a small table before her was the other girl's sketchbook, open at a colourful depiction of two women holding hands and smiling up from the page. The first woman was dressed in black and white, a figure she recognised all too well as herself, whilst the second was all brown hair and green eyes and clothes of gentle pink and soft red.
Beneath the picture was the simple inscription:
'Tifa and...'
