Program Exclusion

Oct 19, 2008 15:56

First SORRY about the previous post... my computer did something wierd.

Has anyone been excluded from their council programs or trainings or whatever? I have and I am pretty sure I am not the first. If anyone has any stories please share. Excluding girls from programs is unprofessional and definately not the message of Girl Scouts.

Thanks.

Well, I have a story. Back in the day (late seventies) I earned the First Class Award. Several years later, my council had a weekend honoring those who had earned the 'highest awards' the pamplets for the weekend camp did state that First Class Award holders were elegible to attend. My leader signed me up. It was suposed to be a relaxing time and mostly fun.

When I got to the camp site, after traveling for three hours, I was told. "Oh, you only earned First Class. First Class means NOTHING now. If you had earned the Silver, that would be another thing. But you can only stay if you promise to be staff and work for those girls who earned the Silver or the Gold. They deserve to be treated like queens because they worked harder then you did."

It was not my fault that my Leaders refused to tell us about the silver until it was too late. At the time you had to earn the silver to 'Go For The Gold."

That weekend wasn't fun to put it mildly. Other First Class Award holders did get to have fun, but they had earned the silver too.

I promised myself that if I ever became a leader, that would never happen to anyone again.
