Hello, all. I searched for a Girl Scout community on a whim today, and look what I found.

Basically, I'm 14, I've been a Girl Scout since fourth grade, and I'm still not sure why. On the outside, I look like I should be the perfect Girl Scout, but really I'm a socially awkward slasher (fanfiction wise) who listens to obscure punk folk music. And ( Read more... )

FWIW, I don't think "perfect Girl Scout" and "socially awkward fanfiction writer who likes obscure music" are mutaully exclusive. Quite the opposite, in fact.

I loved Girl Scouts when I was 14, I earned my Silver & Gold Awards, did CIT I & II, worked summer camps, volunteered in all my spare moments and completed so many interest projects that they illed the front and back of my sash. I was also socially inept, wrote X-Files and Shadowrun based stories in my creative classes, and listened to music no one I knew had heard of.

My advice wrt Gold Award (but applicable to much more, imo): pick a project you like and are interested in. No matter how great it is, if you're not interested in it, it'll feel like a chore, and what's the point of that? Assess your skills and talents and what you like to do and think of ideas of how those things could help other people, and use that to design your project.

My $0.0002. :)

It's girls like you who make the BEST girl scouts :)

I'm 25 did my gold award when I was 15, I was in about the same boat, except that I didn't get into slash till college (what a misspent youth! :) ).

The best advice that I can recommend is to set aside some time EVERY SINGLE WEEK to work on your project. Just like you would homework. That way you get a little bit done every single week and you won't fall behind on things.

Also, get your friends to help out. Having a good crew of people to work with you and get through this stuff with you will REALLY help. It's how I made it through.

Good luck! Do you know what your project is going to be?

Some days I think socially awkward and girl scout are synonymous. The great thing about scouting is that its a great way to connect with other people who also enjoy things that aren't considered the norm.

Good luck on your Gold Award! This is a great place to come and ask for help or project suggestions when you need it. :)

22, Lifetime member, avid yaoi (Japanese term for slash, if you don't know) fan. I've been a Girl Scout since I was six and will be until I die. I don't think there is such a thing as a "perfect" Girl Scout either, because there simply is no such thing as "perfect" at all.

Being a Girl Scout is all about being yourself and a strong woman, after all. It's got nothing to do with conforming or looking/acting a certain way.

Gold Award tip: GET YOUR PAPERWORK DONE ON TIME! This is why I did not get my Gold Award -_-;;;

i've not got any tips on the gold award, as the closest i've come was helping to plan my council's awards ceremony when i was 18...good luck, though!

you sound like me, eleven years ago. i think social awkwardness works for girl scouting, if for no other reason than functioning outside of typical "adolescent cool" has already made you (willingly or not) embrace individuality and independent thinking.
