well, i've recently gotten into the habit of making soundtracks and playlists (mostly of my own life-- that is, songs that represent what's happening in my life at the moment) and i had thought about doing an FST (fan soundtrack) for some of my favorite shows. i decided to start with digimon, so here you have a yamato/sora FST for your enjoyment ^-^ check it out if you like the couple, or if you like digimon, and even if you don't like either, hey, it's free music! go ahead!
this is mainly alternative, with a dash of grunge/punk, because, for one, that's what i usually listen to; and two, because as much as the makers of digimon wanted us to see yamato as some sort of pop idol in season 2, you all KNOW he's much more fit for alternative. that genre was just created for him! you'll also see some ballads towards the end, because, well, the luuuvvvv has to be in there somewhere ^^;;; nevermind that i shudder at the thought of having put nirvana and magneto in the same ST, both of these characters changed so much from season 1 to season 2, that i think these songs still fit.
actually, this FST started with one song-- the very first one. you'll see it. i've always thought that one song was the PERFECT song for yamato in season 01. then i kept adding songs, and suddenly my FST had become a collection of our lady peace songs. then i noticed, and thought to myself "hey, this FST is for digimon, not for evangelion!" (that one's coming soon, wait for it). i mean, these kids have problems-- yama and sora are probably the most troubled characters in digimon-- but they were never THAT dark. so i went back and changed the songs around. ended up with this. i thought it was okay.
now, before you come and yell at me that those songs don't remind you of yamato/sora at all and how dare i say such a thing, please have in mind that i'm not a very poetic person. i can't rhyme to save my life, and i'm definitely not good AT ALL at understanding these deep metaphores songwriters use. i tend to be pretty literal, so in many of these songs, that usually means there's one line or two that reminds me of them, or just how the overall feeling the song gives me. so please don't tell me how i should understand these lyrics-- that's my own personal prerogative, if you think about it =3
and i hope you don't mind that i listen to music in every language i know at least a little bit of ^^;;; if you'd like to know what the whole song means, ask me and i'll translate (or i'll give you a link to a translation in the case of the japanese). download links are beside each song title, and there's a zip file download at the end of this post.
with all of that said, here you go:
SIDE A
YAMATO
01. our lady peace - one man army (
download)
come on, take this gasoline tin,
head up high, walk like a winner;
let the bare feet be the last sounds that they hear...
[...]
i remember falling,
i remember marching
like a one man army,
through the blaze
as i said above, this is the absolute ultimate yamato in 01 song. i've known this since i first saw the show back when i was still in high school. because in the very beginning of 01, yamato was a loner, but he attempted to keep people away very violently. he yelled a lot. this is directly related to the fact that he felt abandoned by his mother, and i guess adults in general after his parents' divorce. he lashed out a lot against the others, taichi mostly, probably in an attempt to just survive through the pain, and show that he didn't need anybody, and i think this song captures that exactly.
02. nirvana - lithium (
download)
i'm so lonely,
but that's okay, i shaved my head,
and i'm not sad.
and just maybe
i'm to blame for all i've heard,
but I'm not sure.
[...]
i like it - i'm not gonna crack.
i miss you - i'm not gonna crack.
i love you - i'm not gonna crack.
i killed you - i'm not gonna crack.
what, you don't see the resemblance between yamato and kurt cobain? xD ok, don't kill me, nirvana fans! *scurries away from mob of people with pitchforks calling her a heretic* i think this song represents a little what yama is towards the middle of season 01. he's still hurt, and is still a loner, but now he's more resigned than agressive. he doesn't see himself needing to be above everyone else, and he certainly helps if he can, even though we still know he's melancholy and sad about his family situation. but he's beginning to see the light.
03. angels & airwaves - the adventure (
download)
i wanna have the same last dream again,
the one where i wake up and i'm alive.
just as the four walls close me within,
my eyes are open up with pure sunlight.
[...]
when everyone was working for this goal,
where all the children left without a trace,
only to come back as pure as gold,
to recite this all.
this song is for yamato in the break between seasons, maybe even in the first few episodes of 02. of all the digidestined kids, i'm sure he was the one that was changed the most from what they lived in the digi-world. this song is about him appreciating what he went through there, remembering it and missing it. because in that world he not only learned to fight what he thought was right, and to help others, but he also found friends, and what's just as important, he found friendship.
04. asian kung-fu generation - shindoukaku (resonance) (
download)
yureru komaku haseru kotoba
urei tomadoi kokoni suteru
yokubetsu na sainou wo...
nani hitotsu motazutomo
kokoro ima kokode kaki arasu wo... wo...
quivering eardrums,
streaming words,
sorrow, bewilderment,
here is where i cast them away
this is, i think, the perfect song for 02 yamato. it's full of musical analogies, and it's all about leaving your pain behind and losing yourself in the music. this reminds me a lot of how he used to be with his harmonica in season 1, which was what began his interest in music in season 2.
SORA
01. nine days - still here (
download)
and i will be there to soften your fall,
and i will be there for the good of it all.
i will not let you feel you've wasted all your time.
and every day we have is one more day that you'll be mine.
ff my life is a flight and a crash in the sea,
i'm still here but i can not speak the words.
i know this song is about a guy whose girlfriend broke up with him and how he's still there for her even though they're not together anymore, but a couple of lines in the song remind me a lot of that whole arc of the storyline where sora went around helping everybody without being seen. because she felt she wasn't good enough to make her own crest glow, but she kept helping the others make their crests glow without even expecting them to know it was her. that's amazing, man.
02. sister hazel - change your mind (
download)
hey, hey,
did you ever think
there might be another way
to just feel better,
just feel better about today?
[...]
if you want to be somebody else,
if you're tired of fighting battles with yourself,
if you want to be somebody else,
change your mind...
this one ties in with the last one. in here, it's not so much the lyrics telling me something about her, but overall how the song makes me feel. i've always found funny that sora never thought she was a good representation of love, but everybody else could see that she was the perfect person for the job! it makes me think that all she needed was to change her point of view, to see herself through the eyes of the others, to feel better about herself. thus, change her mind. and also, i know there are people out there that don't like songs that are recorded live, but i really like this version better than the studio version-- it's faster-paced and the guitar solos in the beginning are really awesome.
03. do as infinity - raven (
download)
yume de mita anata wa totemo chiisaku
hosoi michi ate mo naku aruiteta
kurai yami atari o ouihajime
sagashiteta "takaramono mitsukaru" to...
[...]
ashita mata, onaji michi ayumu nara
soba ni iru atashi o tsurete itte
itazura ni muda ni suru koto mo naku
tachimukau jibun o aiseba ii
in my dream, i saw you
aimlessly walking down a small, thin road.
nearby, darkness begins to cover overhead--
you searched and "found what you treasure"...
[...]
if tomorrow you walk down the same road again,
i'll be next to you, leading you.
nothing's in vain, nothing's useless--
it's okay if i face myself with love.
this song is all about sora falling into that dark cave thing. about how she doesn't feel she's enough, and it just describes so perfectly the darkness enveloping a person. and then it goes on to say how, with love, you can get out of the depression and be happy. isn't it just perfect?
04. oasis - she is love (
download)
when the sunshine beckons to ya,
and your wings begin to unfold,
the thoughts you bring and the songs you sing,
are gonna keep me from the cold.
[...]
she is love,
and the ways are high and steep.
she is love,
and i believe her when she speaks.
oh, just look at the title and figure it out. *rolls eyes* besides that, i think this song is really good to describe sora's maternal personality. she loves everybody, she helps everybody, she's a mediator, and she's always the voice of reason in any situation.
SIDE B
TOGETHER
01. kelly clarkson - because of you (
download)
i will not make the same mistakes that you did.
i will not let myself cause my heart so much misery.
w will not break the way you did, you fell so hard.
i've learned the hard way, to never let it get that far...
because of you, i never stray too far from the sidewalk.
because of you, i learned to play on the safe side,
so i don't get hurt.
because of you, i find it hard to trust not only me,
but everyone around me,
because of you... i am afraid.
this song is the anthem for broken homes. which yamato's is, most definitely, and i can see him determined not to make the same mistakes his parents did in his own relationships; also the whole thing about being afraid to get hurt, that's exactly the reason why he's a loner through all of 01. and while i know that sora's home is technically not broken (how the heck does THAT work, anyway?), that bit about losing one's way and it being immediately pointed out, as well as being ashamed of one's life because it's empty just SCREAM sora to me, sora and the relationship she has for her mother. she doesn't understand why her mother treats her the way she does, and then she feels unworthy of the crest of love because she thinks she can't love. it all fits into the song.
02. kyo - sur nos lèvres (on our lips) (
download)
comment se faire à l'idée
d'ouvrir les mains pour saigner?
comment te faire oublier
tu as les marques du passé
[...]
sur nos lèvres, le monde a écrit
ses mots de peur et ses cris.
sa propre fin est ici.
how do you get used to the idea
of opening your hands to bleed?
how do i make you forget
that you have the marks of the past?
[...]
on our lips, the world has written
its words of fear and its cries.
its own end is here.
these two kids are, in my opinion, the most messed up out of all the digidestined (excluding ken, i guess). the issues they go through, which they mostly work out during the course of season 1, are deep and complex. and everything they've been through has definitely left its mark on them. hence this song.
03. creed - don't stop dancing (
download)
whatever life brings, i’ve been through everything,
and now i’m on my knees again,
but i know i must go on,
although i hurt i must be strong,
because inside I know that many feel this way...
children, don’t stop dancing.
believe you can fly
away...
this one ties in with the last one. because after feeling all that pain, and going through all the hardships they faced in the digital world, they (all of the digidestined kids, really) learned a valuable lesson: to always keep trying. never give up. just because things seem bad doesn't mean there's no solution. and yeah, this song reminds me a lot of "butterfly," the season 1 opening, only... uh... less bouncy and... errr... with less colorful insect metaphores. yeah xD
04. hawk nelson - things we go through (
download)
kyle's parents split up, he thinks it's his fault;
little does he know that the time they're in was difficult.
andrea, she left home, said she had enough;
all she really wanted was somebody else there to love.
she's all alone again, it's the same old argument,
and she needs a helping hand to help her find the truth.
these are the things we go through;
let's take control and be ourselves.
let's not waste time wondering about
how we're gonna make it out.
this song is pretty much similar to the last one in my mind, except in this case it's less of an actual, physical sense of keeping the fight, and more of a letting go of the past and moving on, psychological release type of thing. because it's one thing to want to save the digiworld and their new friends, but if they'd come back home with the same unresolved issues they had when they left, i wouldn't be able to call that much of a character growth. but they did, and that's what this song is about.
05. no doubt - bathwater (
download)
wanted and adored by attractive women,
bountiful selection at your discretion;
i know i'm diving into my own destruction.
[...]
but i still love to wash in your old bathwater,
love to think that you couldn't love another.
i can't help it... you're my kind of man.
this is my shout-out to the fandom. because they may not be the best, and i'm not a huge fan of that particular plot, but i'm pretty sure that 95% of all yamasora fanfics out there deal with yamato being stalked by girls 24/7 and sora not seeing why he would like her out of all the girls he could have. and as much as the plot is overused-- i still love y'all for writing those fics ^.^
06. switchfoot - only hope (
download)
sing to me the song of the stars,
of your galaxy dancing and laughing and laughing again.
when it feels like my dreams are so far,
sing to me of the plans that you have for me over again.
this song is here because... well, i think the imagery is very beautiful. the music, and of course the space metaphores, that just fits yamato to a tee, doesn't it? ^-^ it really sounds, to me, like something he would write, inspired by sora, of course =3 i used the switchfoot version of the song because i love switchfoot, and as much as i think mandy moore's a more than okay singer, her version of this song was just too... dramatic, and perhaps religious for my taste. it doesn't sound so melancholy when they sing it, and it doesn't remind me too much of the movie. so switchfoot it is.
07. magneto - para siempre (forever) (
download)
recuerdo bien el patio de tu casa,
mi sitio favorito en fin de semana.
con la luz apagada para ver las estrellas,
hacia el sur.
tus jeans eran algo tan detestable,
no permitian iniciar la batalla.
echados en la hierba,
me gustaba explorarte,
hacia el sur...
i remember your backyard very well,
my favorite place during the weekends.
with the lights out to watch the stars,
towards the south.
your jeans were such a despicable thing,
they wouldn't let us start the battle.
laying down on the grass,
i liked to explore you,
towards the south...
the latter part of this song doesn't apply much, because the couple does break up in the end, but the first couple of stanzas make me think. because i mean, i've always thought taichi would take a date of his somewhere fun, and mimi would probably appreciate more romantic gestures, but i can really see yama and sora's dates being exactly like this-- just stargazing, and talking, and being together without any of the fancy protocols of normal dates. don't you think so?
so many moments of happiness,
so much clarity, so much fantasy,
so much passion, so much imagination,
and so much giving love until daybreak comes,
so many ways of saying "i love you;"
what you give me doesn't seem human.
[...]
i ask god to let me live long enough
and to give me time time to give back
even just a little part
of how much you give me.
i ask god to let me live long enough
to tell you everything i feel thanks to your love.
mandatory mooshy luv song, because hey, they are canon, after all ^.^ this song could easily apply to any couple that ends up happily married or just together, i guess, but i think it really fits yamasora because yamato's job is crazy dangerous, and i figure that a prayer or two right before takeoff wouldn't be such a farfetched idea. so there.
BONUS TRACKS
...aka songs that have nothing to do with digimon, but that kept popping up when carla set her ipod to shuffle in order to find songs to use in this FST. i figure, since they're being so persistent, i could give them a bit of air-time, since they're great songs as well.
01. greenwheel - radiance (
download)
02. kyo - respire (
download)
and in case you don't want to waste time downloading these songs individually, here's a
zip file. it includes the songs, as well as covers & back covers and all my comments.
so? what did you think? liked it? loved it? hated it? tell me in a comment, and it'll definitely help me with the other FSTs i'm planning to make in the future! ^_______^
